Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC –
Adam Gliebe's second career walk off base hit lifted the Winthrop Eagles past the 24th-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 3-2 in 10 innings on Friday evening at The Winthrop Ballpark. It was the opening contest of a three-game conference series.

The Eagles improve to 24-26 on the season and 12-10 in conference play, while the Chanticleers fall to 33-16 overall and 17-5 in the conference.

Matt Pierpont (4-3) earned the win in relief tossing 2.0 scoreless innings on no hits, no walks and three strikeouts. Keith Hessler (1-2) took the loss allowing one run on one hit, three walks and one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning pitched.

“The guys competed very, very well tonight,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “It was a good, solid baseball game all the way around.”

Winthrop starter Tyler Mizenko tied a career-high on Friday night throwing 8.0 innings and gave up two runs on five hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. His previous season-best of 8.0 innings came against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Rock Hill on Mar. 4. The seven strikeouts recorded by Mizenko tied for the second-most in his career as he struck out seven in the Eagles conference opener against the VMI Keydets on Mar. 18.

Winthrop started the bottom of the tenth inning with three walks by Hessler to Tyler Cook, Eddie Rohan and Matt Lobacz. Cook led off the inning with the walk and Chas Crane would sacrifice him over to second base. The game-winning hit by Gliebe brought home Cook from third base, and gave the Eagles their first win over a top 25 opponent since a 7-4 victory over the fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs in Athens on Apr. 8, 2009.

Rich Witten gave Coastal Carolina a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer, his fourth of the season, to left field in the top of the third inning, but Winthrop trimmed its deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth on Crane's RBI single to left field. Cam Walters scored on the single by Crane after he doubled down the left field line with one out and moved to third on a ground out by Cook.

The game would stay scoreless until the bottom of the ninth inning when TJ Olesczuk tied the contest for the Eagles at 2-2 with his RBI triple into the right center field gap plating Patrick Gamblin from first base. Gamblin reached base on a one-out walk in the previous at-bat.

The walk off by Gliebe was the fourth this season by Winthrop as Walters and Gamblin have also recorded a game-winning hit.

Olesczuk led the Eagles offensively with two hits, and was one of three players with one RBI. Five different Chanticleers posted one hit apiece in the contest, while Witten drove in both runs.

Winthrop and Coastal Carolina will resume their series on Saturday, May 14 with game two of the series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
