Baseball Returns Home This Weekend To Face #24 Coastal Carolina

Eagles Hold 11-10 Mark In Big South Conference Play

ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop baseball team will host Big South Conference foe Coastal Carolina this weekend in a three-game series at The Winthrop Ballpark.

The Eagles enter the weekend with a 23-26 overall and 11-10 in the conference, while the Chanticleers are 33-15 on the season and 17-4 in conference. Winthrop is in fifth place in the conference standings, and Coastal Carolina is first.

Eddie Rohan remains atop the leader board in numerous offensive categories for the Eagles including batting average, home runs, RBI, total bases, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. He is hitting .352 on the season with five home runs, 38 RBI, 94 total bases, .516 slugging percentage and .448 on-base percentage. Rohan led Winthrop last week with two home runs against The Citadel Bulldogs and Presbyterian College Blue Hose.

Patrick Gamblin also posts a team-high 16 doubles and 13 stolen bases in 17 attempts.

The Eagles pitching staff is led by Eric Ruth with a 5-1 record on the mound, and leads all relievers with a .273 opposing average. Tyler Mizenko tops all starting pitchers with a 4-2 mark and 3.89 ERA in 69.1 innings pitched. He also has an opposing average of .261. Robert Lake has pitched a team-best 74.0 innings on the season, while Mitchell Knox's 3.41 ERA is lowest on the team.

The Chanticleers are led offensively by Big South Preseason Player of the Year Tommy La Stella with a .406 average, 11 home runs, 53 RBI, 121 total bases and a .691 slugging percentage. La Stella is tied for the team-lead in the home run category along with Daniel Bowman. Scott Woodward also posts a team-best .505 on-base percentage and 24 stolen bases in 27 attempts.

All three weekend starters for Coastal Carolina, Matt Rein, Josh Conway and Anthony Meo, have seven victories on the mound this season. Rein has a team-low 1.64 ERA for the weekend rotation and Meo with 78.1 innings pitched this season. Jordan Coons's 1.56 ERA is the lowest on the team, and Ryan Connolly has an opposing average of .207 this season.

The Chanticleers are coached by Gary Gilmore, who is in his 22nd year coaching and 16th with the program. He has compiled a career record of 898-420-2 and 642-318 mark with CCU.

Coastal Carolina leads the all-time series over Winthrop 66-45 and 24-22 when playing in Rock Hill. This is the longest running series in the 32 year history of the Eagles baseball program. The two teams have played in a combined 111 games since the series began in 1980. Winthrop won the first-ever meeting against the Chanticleers 4-1 in Rock Hill on Apr. 4, 1980. Coastal Carolina swept the Eagles in three games last season in Conway, but Winthrop took two out of three from the Chanticleers at The Winthrop Ballpark in 2009.

The Eagles will play four games next week, which includes one road contest and three home games. Winthrop will travel to face the Charlotte 49ers on May 17, before hosting the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs May 19-21 in Rock Hill.
