Men's Tennis Continues Winning Streak, Takes Down UNCA

The men's tennis team made it twelve straight and took at least a share of the Big South title as they brought down UNC Asheville 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Courts.

The win puts the Eagles at 14-5 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in the Big South, as UNCA drops to 7-9 on the year and 0-3 in the conference.

In doubles play, Winthrop was able to capture two matches to earn the doubles point. In No. 1 doubles, Sergey Belov and Liran Levy defeated Jonas Brobeck and Matt Waissen 8-6, as Guy Kubi and Nadav Ruppin brought down Nicolai Nonnenbroich and Nathan White 8-2 in No. 2 doubles.

The Eagles continued their winning ways in singles action as they took five matches. Belov took down Waissen 6-2, 6-4 in No. 1 singles, as Dejon Bivens defeated Nonnenbroich 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot. Guy Kubi won in the No. 3 position over Ryan Matthews 6-3, 6-1, as Big South Player of the Week Nadav Ruppin knocked off Brobeck 6-2, 6-3 in No. 5 singles. In No. 6 singles Yuta Hirokawa took down Thomas Rees 6-1, 6-4.

“The guys played very well today,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. ”We were able to win the majority of the important points throughout the matches.”

The Eagles will close out their 2011 season as they remain home to take on Gardner-Webb on Friday, April 15. That match is set for 2:30 p.m.
