Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC –
Brett Thomas homered for the first time this season and Robert Lake tied a season-high with 8.0 innings pitched on Saturday afternoon as the Winthrop Eagles picked up a 10-2 win over the UNC Asheville Bulldogs at The Winthrop Ballpark.

The Eagles, who have now won three conference series this season, move their record to 17-14 overall and 8-3 in the Big South. The Bulldogs drop to 10-20 on the season and 4-7 in conference play.

Lake (2-2) allowed just two runs in the contest on seven hits, one walk and five strikeouts en route to the win on the mound. He picked up his other victory of the season throwing 8.0 innings in a 2-1 win in the doubleheader finale against the Liberty Flames on Mar. 25. Grier Harrington (2-6) took the loss throwing 3.0 innings and gave up six runs on seven hits, no walks and four strikeouts.

Robert Lake was outstanding today,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “That was exactly what we needed. We also came out and swung the bats real well, and had solid defense.”

Winthrop wasted little time taking a 2-0 lead over UNC Asheville in the bottom of the second inning. Adam Gliebe led off the inning with a single, and then scored in the next at-bat on a double off the left field wall by Thomas. Thomas later scored on a single to right center field by TJ Olesczuk.

Thomas highlighted the third inning for the Eagles with his first career homer at Winthrop, a two-run shot, which followed an RBI single by Gliebe. The three runs by the Eagles in the third increased their lead to 6-0.

The Eagles added three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make it a 9-0 game. Winthrop plated one run in the fifth and two in the sixth. The lone run in the fifth came on a RBI triple by Olesczuk to the right center field gap, while Gliebe drove in both runs with a single in the sixth.

Cam Walters drove in Matt Pierpont, who started the inning with a double, on a RBI groundout to go ahead of the Bulldogs 10-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning.

UNC Asheville did score a run each in the eighth and ninth innings to cut its deficit to 10-2. Cody Buch's third home run of the season, a solo homer, was the only run in the top of the eighth. Andrew Kirkland provided a bases loaded RBI single to left field with no outs in the ninth inning.

Gliebe and Thomas both posted three hits on the afternoon for the Eagles, and each had three RBI. Olesczuk and Walters also had two RBI in the second game of the series. Buch had a team-high two hits for the Bulldogs, and had one RBI along with Kirkland.

Winthrop and UNC Asheville will conclude its weekend series with game three on Sunday, Apr. 10 at 1 p.m.
