Baseball Hosts Mercer This Weekend In Non-Conference Series

Winthrop Leads All-Time Series Over The Bears 4-1

The Winthrop baseball team will remain in non-conference play this weekend entertaining the Mercer Bears in a three-game series at The Winthrop Ballpark. The two teams will play a doubleheader opener on Saturday at 2 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Eagles enters the weekend looking to snap a three-game losing streak and are 19-23 overall this season.

The Bears come into the three-game series with a 28-15 overall record and play in the Atlantic Sun Conference. They are coached by Craig Gibson, who is in his 8th year with the program and has compiled a career record of 228-207.

Winthrop leads the all-time series over Mercer 3-1, but the two teams have not faced each other since the 2001 season. The Eagles won the first-ever meeting 9-2 in Macon, GA, and then won the second contest 13-2. In the 2001 campaign, the teams split a two-game series in Rock Hill.

The Eagles are led offensively by Eddie Rohan with a .357 average at the plate, three home runs, 30 RBI and 80 total bases. He has started and played in all 42 contests this season for Winthrop. His .453 on-base percentage ranks him ninth currently in the Big South Conference. Chas Crane posts a team-best 38 walks this season in 153 at-bats, and also leads the conference in that category.

Eric Ruth tops the Eagle pitching staff, and tied for fourth, with five wins in 2011. All five of his wins have come in relief outings. Four other pitchers lead Winthrop in a category starting with Matteo D'Angelo and his five walks allowed in 53.1 innings pitched. Tyler Mizenko's .256 opposing average is lowest on the team, while Robert Lake has tossed 61.2 innings. Mitchell Knox has a team-low ERA of 3.09.

The Bears currently post a team batting average of .312, which consists of a team-high .378 average by Thomas Carroll. Jacob Tanis leads Mercer with 12 home runs and 57 RBI, and is tied with Carroll at 113 total bases. Billy Burns has 25 stolen bases on the season in 28 attempts, and is the only Bears player with double digit stolen bases. Mercer has hit a combined 65 home runs on the season.

The pitching staff is led by Brandon Love with a 5-1 record, 2.56 ERA and .234 opposing average, while Justice French has pitched in a team-best 57.1 innings this season. David Teasley has appeared in a team-best 25 games, with Love and French starting in 10 games each.

The Eagles will play four road games next weekend beginning with a midweek contest at The Citadel (May 4) for the second time this season before stepping back into conference play at Presbyterian May 6-8.
