ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop baseball team will return to action on Tuesday evening with a midweek matchup against the 28th-ranked Charlotte 49ers at The Winthrop Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

The Eagles enter the contest with a 19-22 overall record, while the 49ers are 31-9 and play in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Charlotte leads the all-time series over Winthrop 13-12-1, but the Eagles hold an 8-4-1 advantage in games played at The Winthrop Ballpark. Winthrop won the first-ever meeting between the teams 3-0 in Rock Hill on Apr. 17, 1980, and the 49ers were victorious in the last meeting on Apr. 14, 2010 in Charlotte 16-5.

The Eagles are led offensively by Eddie Rohan with a .351 average, three home runs and 29 RBI in 41 games played and started. He is currently 10th in the Big South Conference this season with a .446 on-base percentage. Rohan hit his 45th career home run in game one against Charleston Southern on Apr. 23, and moves him into a tie for third place all-time in Big South history with Mike Costanzo of Coastal Carolina (2003-05) in that category. He also moves into fifth place for the Big South and fourth at Winthrop in career total bases at 460. Rohan needs 14 more total bases to pass Brandon Powell of Coastal Carolina (2000-03) for fourth place in the conference, and 40 to move past Todd Leathers (1999-02) into third place as an Eagle.

Two other Winthrop hitters rank in the top 10 for the conference as Chas Crane leads the league with 36 walks and Patrick Gamblin is tied for fifth in doubles at 14. The team as a whole has a conference-best .970 fielding percentage.

Eric Ruth leads the Eagles pitching staff with a 5-1 record on the mound and is fourth in the Big South in wins. Matteo D'Angelo tops all starting pitchers with a 3.71 ERA, while Mitchell Knox's 3.09 ERA is best for the relievers. Tommy Lawrence is tied for fifth in the conference with four saves on the season.

Winthrop will send Matt Pierpont to the mound against Charlotte. Pierpont posts a 1-2 record this season with a 7.14 ERA in four previous starts and 10 appearances. He has allowed 26 runs (23 earned) on the season with 33 hits, 11 walks and 19 strikeouts in 29.0 innings pitched.

The 49ers are under the direction of head coach Loren Hibbs, who is in his 19th year with the program. Charlotte is led by Ross Steedley at the plate with a .340 average, while Corey Shaylor leads with three home runs and Cory Tilton has 40 RBI.

Two weekend starters for the 49ers, Andrew Smith and Corey Roberts, have a team-high seven wins. Smith compiles a 1.34 ERA so far this season, while Roberts has 68.1 innings pitched this season.

Charlotte will start Joe Yermal on the mound Tuesday night against the Eagles. Yermal currently holds a 3-1 record with a 2.28 ERA in five starts. He has pitched 27.2 innings and given up 11 runs (seven earned) on 21 hits, five walks and 21 strikeouts.

Winthrop will remain in non-conference play this weekend hosting the Mercer Bears in a Saturday-Sunday three game series. Saturday will consist of a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m., while Sunday's game is at 1 p.m.
