CHARLOTTE, NC – The men's tennis team remained undefeated in the Big South as they brought down the No. 5 seed UNC Asheville Bulldogs 4-1 Friday afternoon at the Charlotte Indoor Tennis Complex. The Eagles will advance to the conference championship on Saturday to try and defend their title from a year ago.
The win brings the Eagles to 15-5 overall, as UNCA ends its season at 10-11.
The Bulldogs jumped out on the scoreboard first as they took two doubles matching, claiming the point. In No. 1 doubles, Winthrop's
Sergey Belov and
Liran Levy fell to Asheville's Matt Waissen and Jonas Brobeck 8-4. In No. 2 doubles,
Guy Kubi and
Nadav Ruppin lost to Nathan White and
Nicola Nonnenbroich 8-5.
In the singles round, the Eagles stormed back, taking four matches and eliminating UNC Asheville. In No. 1 singles, player of the year
Sergey Belov knocked off Adrien Langeard 6-2, 6-3, as
Dejon Bivens defeated Waissen 6-3, 7-5 in No. 2 singles. Kubi cruised in No. 4 singles as he brought down Ryan Matthews 6-3, 6-1, and Ruppin bounced back by defeating Brobeck 6-4, 6-4 in No. 5 singles.
"We had a very tough match today, Asheville played well in the doubles round," head coach
Cid Carvalho said. "But I was glad on the way rebounded in singles play. We look forward to playing in the championship."
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, April 22 as they will face the No. 2 seed Radford. The championship is slated for 1 p.m at the Memorial Courts. In case of inclement weather, the championship will be moved to the Charlotte Indoor Tennis Center.
