Men's Tennis Blanks Gardner-Webb, Takes Regular Season Title

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop men's tennis team closes out its 2011 regular season with a sweep over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs 7-0 to remain undefeated in Big South play Friday afternoon at the Memorial Courts.

The win brings the Eagles to 15-5 on the season and 6-0 in the conference, as GWU goes to 10-11 on the year and 3-3 in the Big South.

In doubles action, Sergey Belov and Liran Levy won by a retirement by Andrew Carter and Andrew Veeder 6-2 in No. 1 doubles. In No. 2 doubles, Guy Kubi and Nadav Ruppin brought down Roman Piftor and Julien Belair 9-7.

The Eagles continued to roll in the singles round as they took all six matches. In No. 1 singles, Belov remained undefeated in conference play as he defeated Belair 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. In No. 2 singles, Dejon Bivens knocked off Ates 7-6, 6-3, as Levy defeated Piftor 6-2, 7-6 in No. 3 singles. In No. 4 singles, Kubi brought down Adam Knutsson-Sunbald 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, as Ruppin took down Matthew Parker 6-3, 6-2 in No. 5 singles. In No. 6 singles, Yuta Hirokawa defeated Carter 6-1, 6-2.

“I'm proud of the guys for playing tough and finishing the regular season strong,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “But our job has not finished yet as we prepare to play the conference tournament next weekend here at Winthrop.”

The Eagles will participate in the 2011 Big South Men's Tennis Championships presented by Musco Sports Lighting. This year's tournament will be held at Winthrop's Memorial Courts and the first match of the tournament is slated for Thursday, April 21 at 9 a.m. Stay tuned to winthropeagles.com for further updates.
