Baseball Jumps Back Into Conference Play This Weekend At Radford

Eagles Have Won Three Of Four Conference Series This Season

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop baseball team will face the Radford Highlanders this weekend in a three-game conference series at Radford University Baseball Field. This will be the third conference series this season that the Eagles have played on the road.

After the 6-5 10-inning win over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Wednesday night, Winthrop improved its record to 18-16 overall and are 8-4 in the Big South. The Highlanders are currently 18-14 on the season and 4-5 in conference play.

The Eagles lead the all-time series over Radford 51-29 and 25-16 when playing in Radford, VA. Winthrop won the first-ever meeting between the two teams 11-1 in Rock Hill on Mar. 28, 1985 and began the series winning the first nine meetings. Radford has won the last two series over the Eagles picking up two out of the three games, once in Radford and once in Rock Hill. Winthrop did record a 21-3 victory over the Highlanders in an elimination game during the 2009 Big South Tournament in Asheville, NC.

Eddie Rohan increased his RBI total to 26 on the season after recording three against the Demon Deacons and leads Winthrop in that category along with a .376 average, 66 total bases and remains tied with Adam Gliebe at two home runs. The Eagles are hitting .297 as team so far in 2011.

Eric Ruth picked up his team-best fifth win of the season with the victory over Wake Forest, and also leads the team with 16 appearances on the mound. Matteo D'Angelo's 2.98 ERA in the lowest for Winthrop, while the .253 opposing average against Tyler Mizenko is a team-low. Robert Lake has pitched in 52.1 innings this season for the Eagles.

Radford is led offensively by Matt Mack with a .384 average, while Matt Hillsinger has a team-high 26 RBI and 76 total bases. Hillsinger and Zach Costello are tied for the team lead with five home runs each. The Highlanders are currently hitting .297 as a team.

Bobby Bolling tops the pitching staff with a 4-2 record and a 2.96 ERA in 51.2 innings pitched. Eddie Butler also has four wins on the mound this season and posts a team-low .216 opposing average. The Radford pitching staff has a team ERA of 4.54.

The Highlanders are under the direction of fourth-year head coach Joe Raccuia.

Winthrop will travel to face the Demon Deacons at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Apr. 19 before hosting the Charleston Southern Buccaneers Apr. 22-23 at The Winthrop Ballpark.
