Men's And Women's Tennis Both Sweep Against Presbyterian College

CLINTON, SC – The men's and women's tennis teams picked up wins Friday afternoon as they both shut out Presbyterian College 7-0 at the Templeton Courts.

The men's team improves to 12-5 on the season and 3-0 in the Big South, as the Lady Eagles go to 13-10 on the year and 4-0 in the conference.

In the men's match, the Eagles cruised through the doubles round by taking all three matches. In No. 1 doubles, Winthrop's Sergey Belov and Liran Levy took down Andrew Brigham and Gonzalo Asis 8-5, as Guy Kubi and Nadav Ruppin got past Grayson Mills and Rafael Berghaus 8-5 in No. 2 doubles. Rounding out doubles action, Yuta Hirokawa and Dejon Bivens rolled by Edward Snead IV and Zachary Sprouse 8-4 in No. 3 doubles.

In singles action, the Eagles kept up with their winning ways by taking all six matches. In No. 1 singles, Belov continues his great season by defeated Grayson Mills 5-7, 7-6, 6-1, as Bivens cruised by Brigham 6-0, 6-1 in No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles, Levy got by Berghaus 4-6, 6-0, 6-4, as Kubi took down Kenneth Mooney 6-2, 6-1 in No. 4 singles. In No. 5 singles, Ruppin defeated Asis 6-1, 6-2, as Hirokawa knocked off Sprouse 6-4, 6-1 in No. 6 singles.

On the women's side, the Lady Eagles started off well by sweeping through the doubles round, taking all three matches. In No. 1 doubles, Yasmine Alkema and Lisa Wilkinson brought down Christina Limantoro and Paige Oelke 8-2. In No. 2 doubles, Giovanna Portioli and Sandra Herrera defeated Patricia Alves and Courtney Gardiner 8-1, as Elizaveta Zaytseva and Sara Abutovic cruised past Lindsay Krause and Cara Caruso 8-1 in No. 3 doubles.

The singles round went just as well as the doubles round for the Lady Eagles as not a single Winthrop player dropped a set. In No. 1 singles, Alkema defeated Oelke 6-4, 6-1, as Zaytseva knocked off Limantoro 6-4, 6-0 in No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles, Herrera shut out Gardiner 6-0, 6-0, as Portioli got a win over Alves 6-2, 6-1 in No. 4 singles. Wilkinson took down Caruso in No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1, as Abutovic defeated Krause 6-2, 6-1 in No. 6 singles.

Both teams will travel together on Sunday, April 3 when they go to Conway, SC to take on conference rival Coastal Carolina. Those matches are slated for 1 p.m.
