Men's Tennis Defeats Radford 4-3

The Winthrop men's tennis team got a key conference victory over the Radford Higlanders 4-3 Friday afternoon at the Memorial Courts.

The win puts the Eagles at 5-5 on the season and 2-0 in the conference as Radford drops to 4-3 on the year and 1-1 in the Big South.

The Eagles could not get the doubles point as they dropped two of the three doubles matches. The only win came at No. 3 doubles as Dejon Bivens and Yuta Hirokawa defeated Nicholas Sayer and Joe Mills 8-6.

Winthrop fought its way back in the singles round, taking the four matches they needed to grabbed the victory. The clinching victory came at No. 3 singles as Liran Levy took down Ignor Ogizek 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. In No. 1 singles, Sergey Belov cruised past Ivan Salec 6-4, 6-4, as Guy Kubi got a victory over Thomas Dehaen 6-1, 6-3 in No. 4 singles. In No. 6 singles Hirokawa continued his winning ways over Mills 6-2, 6-1.

“It was an outstanding effort by our guys tonight,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “It was a great overall collegiate match.” 

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday, March 9 as they play host to Gardner Webb in another Big South contest. Those matches are set for 3 p.m.
