Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA –
The Liberty Flames plated a total of eleven runs in the middle three innings on Saturday afternoon as it defeated the Winthrop Eagles 16-7 in the rubber game of a three-game Big South Conference series at Worthington Stadium.

The Eagles fall to 10-13 overall and 3-3 in the Big South, while the Flames improve their record to 14-11 on the season and 5-1 in conference play.

Matteo D'Angelo (2-4) took the loss throwing 4.0 innings in the finale allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Steven Evans (3-3) surrendered one run on two hits, three walks and six strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work to pick up the win.

“We made some mistakes early in the ballgame with a couple of costly errors,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “We put up seven runs in the seventh inning and made a run at it, but Liberty answered with two runs in the eighth inning that kind of sealed it for us.”

Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double down the right field line by Doug Bream which scored Casey Rasmus from second base. Rasmus reached on a bunt single earlier in the inning and then stole second.

The Flames then added a run in their half of the fourth inning to make it a 2-0 game. Jeff Jefferson's RBI single to left field brought in Tyler Bream, who started the inning reaching on an error by Matt Pierpont at third base, for the only run of the inning.

Liberty broke the game open scoring seven runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth to go ahead of Winthrop 12-0. The fifth was highlighted by a three-run homer to left field by Austin Taylor which capped off the scoring in that inning. Matt Williams also added a two RBI single to center field in the fifth, while Jeff Jefferson and Doug Bream drove in a run each. The sixth inning saw Williams hit a one-out solo homer to left center field, and then back-to-back RBI doubles from Michael Robertson and Marcus Grimaldi.

The Eagles cut their deficit to 12-7 after driving in seven runs during the top of the seventh inning. Matt Pierpont got the run scoring started with his RBI single down the left field line and was followed two batters later with an RBI single to center field by Adam Gliebe. Chas Crane also recorded an RBI single to right field, while Tyler Cook and Eddie Rohan each posted two RBI hits. Cook had a single to left field and Rohan doubled off the center field wall.

“The only positive we had out of today was the seven-run seventh inning,” Riginos said. “We just weren't able to take advantage of situations today and it showed up in the box score.”

The Flames answered back with two runs each in the seventh and eighth innings to increase their lead to nine at 16-7. Williams drove in both runs during the seventh inning with his RBI double to right center field, and Jefferson and Taylor drove in a run apiece in the eighth.

Crane and Rohan each had 2-for-5 performances to lead Winthrop offensively, while Rohan and Cook had two RBI. Williams went 4-for-5 at the plate for Liberty and also had a team-high five RBI.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 29 as they will host the Furman Paladins at The Winthrop Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
