Baseball Faces Liberty This Weekend In First Conference Road Series

Eagles Tied For Second In Conference Standings; Liberty In First

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop Eagles will make the trip to the state of Virginia this weekend to face the Liberty Flames at Worthington Stadium in its first conference road series of the season. All three contests will be televised on Comporium Cable Channel 18.

The Eagles enter the three-game series with a 9-11 overall record and 2-1 mark in the Big South. The Flames are 12-10 on the season and 3-0 in the conference. Winthrop is tied for second in the conference standings at 2-1 with Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, while Liberty is the lone undefeated team at 3-0.

Senior Eddie Rohan leads the Eagles offense with a .408 average at the plate, and is tied with sophomore Patrick Gamblin with one homer on the season. Rohan hit his first home run of the season on Mar. 22 against the No. 1 Florida Gators, which puts him all alone in second place for most career home runs at Winthrop and tied for fourth with Steve Wright (1995-98) of Liberty in the Big South. He also leads the team with 14 RBI on the season. Junior Tyler Mizenko leads the Eagle starting pitchers with a 3.07 ERA, while sophomore Tommy Lawrence tops all relievers with a 1.98 ERA. Lawrence has a team-best three saves on the season, and is tied with sophomore Eric Ruth with nine appearances. Ruth has a team-high three victories, all of which have come in relief appearances.

The Flames are under the direction of fourth-year head coach Jim Toman. He holds a career coaching record, all of which have come with Liberty, of 122-76-1. Matt Williams leads the team at the plate with a .372 average, while Michael Robertson, Casey Rasmus, Austin Taylor and Jeff Jefferson all have a team-best two homers. Both Doug and Tyler Bream have driven in 15 runs each on the season. Keegan Linza leads the Flames pitching staff in numerous categories including won-loss record, ERA, complete games and innings pitched. He is currently 4-0 in 2011 with a 2.33 ERA, two complete games and 38.2 innings pitched. Josh Richardson and Dane Beakler have both added two saves.

Winthrop leads the all-time series over Liberty 38-35, but trail 17-11 in games played at Lynchburg, VA. The Eagles won the regular season series in Rock Hill last season taking two out of three against the Flames. Liberty, however, came back to Rock Hill the next week and defeated Winthrop twice in the Big South Tournament. The Flames won the second round game 7-2, and then eliminated the Eagles 9-7 on May 28, 2010. That was the last meeting between the two teams.  Winthrop won the first-ever meeting in the series 4-1 on June 5, 1981 when it was still playing in the NAIA.

The Eagles will return to Rock Hill for a midweek contest against the Furman Paladins on Mar. 29 before traveling to High Point, NC to face the High Point Panthers in a three-game Big South series Apr. 1-3. The matchup against the Paladins will be the first for Winthrop since an 11-6 win at The Winthrop Ballpark on May 5, 2004. The Panthers took two out of three from the Eagles last season in Rock Hill.
