Baseball Blanked By No. 1 Florida 10-0

Pierpont Tosses Career-High 5.1 Innings In First Start Of Season

Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop baseball team recorded only four hits on Wednesday evening as it fell to the top-ranked Florida Gators 10-0 at McKethan Stadium. It was the final game of a two-game midweek series with the Gators.

The Eagles fall to 9-11 on the season, while Florida improves to 20-2 overall.

Matt Pierpont (0-2) took the loss allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits, one walk and two strikeouts as he threw a career-high 5.1 innings. Alex Panteliodis (2-0) earned the win as he pitched 6.0 innings of scoreless baseball on three hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

“We competed a lot more tonight,” said head coach Tom Riginos. “Matt Pierpont competed very, very well for us. He gave us 5.1 innings and everything he had, and gave us a chance to win. The line score tonight doesn't indicate what the game was really like.”

The Gators plated one run each in the first three innings, and headed into the top of the fourth inning with a 3-0 lead over Winthrop. A fielding error in the first by Adam Gliebe at shortstop allowed Daniel Pigott, who reached on a fielder's choice, to score from third base. In the second inning, Mike Zunino led off the inning with a single to right field and later came home on an RBI sacrifice fly to center field by Josh Adams. Preston Tucker added an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third.

Tucker highlighted Florida's sixth inning with a one-out solo home run off the scoreboard in right field as it plated seven runs to increase the lead to 10-0. He would come up again in the sixth and drove in Nolan Fontana with an RBI double down the left field line. Adams had a two RBI single, while Pigott and Jeff Moyer also added an RBI in the inning. Moyer also came home on a wild pitch by Eagle reliever Kenny Monteith.

Gliebe, Patrick Gamblin, Tyler Cook and Eddie Rohan each had one hit for Winthrop. Four different Gator hitters recorded two hits apiece in the series finale, while Tucker and Adams drove in three runs.

The Eagles will return to Big South Conference play this weekend with a three-game road series in Lynchburg, VA against the Liberty Flames. The game times for the series are 7 p.m. on Friday, and 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. All three contests will be televised on Comporium Cable Channel 18.
