Men's Tennis Makes It Seven Straight, Defeates Marquette

JACKSONVILLE, FL –
The men's tennis team went a perfect four-for-four on their Florida road trip, capping the journey off with a win over Marquette 5-2 Friday morning on the campus of Florida State Junior College.

The victory puts Winthrop at 9-5 on the season as the Golden Eagles fall to 9-6.

The Eagles were able to capture the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. In No. 2 doubles, Nadav Ruppin and Guy Kubi knocked off Juan Carlos Gutierrez Crowley and Dan Mamalat 8-4, as Dejon Bivens and Yuta Hirokawa fended off Drake Kakar and Otavio Perim 8-6 in No. 3 doubles.

In singles action, the Eagle continued to cruise, taking four matches. In No. 1 singles, Sergey Belov captured another singles match, bringing down Gutierrez Crowley 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, as Bivens took down Mamalat 6-3, 6-3 in No. 2 singles. In No. 3 singles, Liran Levy defeated Jose Manuel Munoz 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 as Ruppin beat Logon Collins in two sets 6-3, 7-6 in No. 5 singles.

"Marquette has a great team,” assistant coach Andrew Stubbs said. “We showed excellent mental toughness and physical conditioning to get this win today, from the first point to the last.”

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday, March 20 when they host USC Upstate. That match is set for 2 p.m.
