Men's Tennis Defeats Hatters 5-2

The men's tennis team got their second victory of the their Florida road trip, this time taking down the Stetson Hatters 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

The win improves Winthrop's record to 7-5 on the season as Stetson drops to 11-6 on the year.

The Eagles did not start well as they dropped the doubles point. Winthrop was able to take one doubles match as Sergey Belov and Liran Levy took down
Cesare Gallo and Didrik Berg 8-5 in No. 1 doubles.

Despite the slow start, the Eagles cruised through the singles round. In No. 1 singles, Belov defeated Gallo 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, as Dejon Bivens knocked off Njal Stene 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 in No. 2 singles. Levy got his second win of the day by defeating Berg 6-4, 6-4 in No. 3 singles. In No. 5 singles, Nadav Ruppin took down Hans Adrian Riseng 6-1, 6-4 as Yuta Hirokawa beat Chris Swanteson 6-4, 4-6, 3-0 in No. 6 singles.

“Today was an absolute team effort,” head coach Andrew Stubbs said. “The entire team showed excellent composure and came together for the hard fought victory.”

The Eagles will be back on the courts Wednesday, March 16 as they travel to North Florida. That match is slated for 2 p.m.
