Men's Tennis Drops Second Straight To CAA Opponent

RICHMOND, VA –
The Winthrop men's tennis team lost its second straight match on Sunday as the Eagles fell to VCU 6-1 at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.

The loss drops the Eagles to 2-4 on the season, as the Rams improve their record to 7-1.

Winthrop dropped the doubles point as VCU swept all three matches. In No. 1 doubles, Winthrop's Sergey Belov and Yuta Hirokawa were defeated by Jaime Vazquez Catoira and Camill Saloman 8-5. In No. 2 doubles, Liran Levy and Guy Kubi dropped to Tim Johannsen and Antoine Baroz 8-3, as Max Wennakoski and Filip Svensson of VCU took down Pedro Bernardi and Dejon Bivens 8-4 in No. 3 doubles.

The Eagles were able to come away with one victory in singles play as Bivens beat Baroz in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in No. 2 singles. Liran Levy and Guy Kubi were able to go into three sets, but did not come away with victories.

“It was another tough match for our men's team,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “We played well, but came up short.”

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 9 as they travel to Davidson. Those matches are set for 5 p.m.
