Men's Tennis Falls To Tough Old Dominion Team

NORFOLK, VA –
The Winthrop men's tennis team was defeated Saturday morning by the Old Dominion Monarchs 4-3 at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

The loss brings the Eagles to 2-3, as Old Dominion improves to 6-1 on the season.

The Eagles could not get the doubles point, but were able to take one match as Guy Kubi and Liran Levy defeated ODU's Benjamin Chomette and Clay Cypert 8-6 in No. 2 doubles. Sergey Below and Yuta Hirokawa fell to Tobias Fanselow and Krzystof Muzalewski 8-2 in No. 1 doubles. In No. 3 doubles, Old Dominion's Albert Ochagavia and Alfredo Rodriguez took down Dejon Bivens and Nadav Ruppin 8-6.

In singles action, Winthrop took three matches as Bivens defeated Chomette in a three set match (6-1, 3-6, 6-1) in No. 2 singles, and Hirokawa was able to beat Cypert 6-7, 6-4, (10-4) in No. 6 singles. Winthrop's third win came from Kubi who beat Rodriguez 6-3, 6-1.

“It came down to the doubles point today,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “But we played well; Old Dominion was just a little better.”

The men's team will be back in action Sunday, Feb. 6 as they travel to VCU. Those match are set to start at 10 a.m.
