Box Score

ROCK HILL, SC --
The Winthrop men's tennis opened up its 2011 conference season by getting a victory over the Liberty Flames 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Courts.

The win now puts the Eagles at 4-5 on the season and 1-0 in the Big South as Liberty falls to 2-6 on the year and 0-1 in the conference.

The Eagles did not start well as they dropped all three doubles matches, but rebounded well in the singles round. Winthrop was able to take all six singles matches, and two matches went into three sets. In No. 1 singles, Sergey Belov took down Liberty's Slim Tuus 6-2, 6-2, as Dejon Bivens fought off an illness as well as Tristan Stayt in No. 2 singles 6-1, 1-6, 7-6. In No. 3 singles, Liran Levy marched over Shea Thomas 6-4, 6-4, as Guy Kubi took down Giancarlo Lemmi 6-3, 7-5 in No. 4 singles. Nadav Ruppin was able to beat Mandeep Yadev in three sets 6-2, 6-7, 10-6 in No. 5 singles, and Yuta Hirokawa cruised to win over Piotr Kruk 6-1, 6-3.

“Our guys responded well after dropping the doubles point,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “It feels good to be 1-0 in the conference.”

The men's team will take the courts again on Friday, March 4 when they continue conference play against the Radford Highlanders at the Memorial Courts. Those matches are set for 3 p.m.
