Men's Tennis Gets Much Needed Victory Over Davidson

ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop men's tennis team got back on the winning track on Wednesday afternoon as they defeated the Davidson Wildcats 5-2 at the Memorial Courts.

The win now put the Eagles at 3-5 on the season, as the Wildcats fall to 3-7.

In doubles action, the Eagles jumped out quickly, taking all three doubles matches, earning the doubles point. In. No. 1 doubles, Sergey Below and Liran Levy took down Davidson's Joe Schafer and Chris Mark 8-1. The clinching match came in No. 3 doubles where Dejon Bivens and Yuta Hirokawa defeated Kevin Moore and Robert Lightbourn 8-4. In No. 2 doubles, Guy Kubi and Nadav Ruppin knocked out Walker Lyons and Ethan Kallich 8-6.

In singles action, the Eagles continued to dominate as Belov continued his winning ways as he defeated Schafer 6-1, 6-4 in No. 1 singles. In other action, Levy took down Lyons 6-0, 6-2 in No. 3 singles, as Ruppin outplayed Kallich 6-4, 6-1 in No. 5 singles. Hirokawa came away the victor is his match against Lightbourn 6-2, 6-3 in No. 6 singles. Also coming away with a point was Ruppin as he defeated Kallich 6-4, 6-1 in No. 5 singles.

"It feels good to get back on the winning track," head coach Cid Carvalho said. "Hopefully we can build on this win."

The Eagles will be back on the courts on Saturday, Feb. 26 as they open Big South play against the Liberty Flames. Those matches are set to begin at 2 p.m.
