Men's Tennis Gets Knocked Off By Georgia State

The Winthrop men's tennis team dropped its fifth match of the season, losing to Georgia State 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Courts.

The loss now brings the Eagles to 2-5 on the season, as Georgia State improves to 9-3.

The Eagles were able to capture only one doubles match, failing to receive the doubles point. Winthrop's only doubles victory came from the tandem of Sergey Belov and Liran Levy as they were able to defeated Trenton Spinks and Gabe Townes 8-4 in No. 1 doubles. Georgia State took the other two matches, as Thomas Cook and Victor Valente defeated Winthrop's Guy Kubi and Nadav Ruppin 8-5 in No. 2 doubles. GSU's other doubles victory came from their duo of Juan Pablo Gutierrez and Lucas Santana as they took down Yuta Hirokawa and Pedro Bernardi 8-3.

In singles play, the Eagles nabbed two matches, but it was not enough to take the overall victory. In No.1 singles, Belov knocked off Townes 6-2, 6-2, as Hirokawa defeated Gutierrez 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in No. 5 singles.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 23 as they will host Davidson. That match is slated for 3:30 p.m.
