AKRON, OH-- Two Winthrop track and field athletes moved up the record list for the Eagles while competing at the prestigious Akron Invitational over the weekend.
Senior hurdler Keary Simms, the defending Big South Conference Indoor Champion, improved his conference leading performance in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.08 seconds as he claimed 4th place in the Gold (Invitational) Division.. Simms is now the No. 2 performer all time as he trails only seven-time Big South champion Kandick Cooper' s conference record of 7.87 seconds.
Junior distance performer Adam Leroux moved up the ladder in the 800 meter run with a 4th place finish in the Blue (Collegiate) Division for the 800 meters in 1:53.6 trailing only Matt Ellott who now runs for Brooks Racing Team. Leroux's time ranks 2nd in the BSC.
Other top performances were turned in by junior Dexter Young who won the Blue Division in the high jump with a clearance of 6-feet, 6-inches while freshman distance runner Jeanne Stroud finished 7th in the Blue Division's 3000 meter run with a personal best of 10:27.
"This was a great meet to see where our best of the best stack up. Any time you can compete at this level and run and throw and jump as we did , it shows that we are performing well at the right time"
The Eagles will compete with a full squad this Friday at the Mountaineer Invitational at Appalachian State. The Big South Indoor Championships are set for Feb. 24-25 at Clemson University.
