ROCK HILL, SC—Over the last seven games, the Eagles are 4-3 following a seven-game losing streak and will look to remain on a roll as it hosts Radford Saturday, Nov. 5 at noon.
Winthrop, winners of three of its last four matches, is now 7-10 on the year and 4-4 in the Big South. A win against the Highlanders could put the Eagles in a tie for third place and a loss could drop them down to as low as the seventh seed in next week's conference tournament.
It will be “Senior Day” Saturday for three Winthrop seniors as
Matt Horn,
Andres Pullin and
Josh Goldstein will play their final game at Eagle Field.
The Eagles will face a Radford squad that is looking to finish the regular season with a winning record as it currently sits at 8-8-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the league. The Highlanders can finish as high as tied for fourth in the league standings with a win and will have to do so without one of their more talented midfielders as Chel Ho Kim Park must sit after receiving two yellow cards in the loss to Liberty on Wednesday.
Kim Park is tied for the league-lead with eight assists, but is not the only playmaker on the Highlander roster as his eight points ranks third on the team. Senior forward Iyiola Awosika leads the team with 19 points as he has a team best eight goals and has dished out three assists. The 2008 Big South Freshman of the Year is ranked fourth in scoring in the Big South and tied for 47
th nationally in total goals. Another talented midfielder for Radford is sophomore Luis Grande, who has six goals and three assists on the year. Grande and Awosika each have two game-winning goals on the year.
Radford has played a tough schedule and lost two one-goal games at the hands of #4 Maryland and Virginia on the road. The Highlanders are 2-2-1 in their last five games and have lost their last four road games. They have also faced #23 Georgetown, Virginia Tech and conference foe Coastal Carolina (ranked 12
th nationally).
Winthrop is coming off a 1-0 road win over Gardner-Webb, in which sophomore
Nick Kowalski found the net for the first time this season in the only goal of the game. Junior
Enrique Miranda made four saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season and eighth of his career.
Alex Mantchev still leads the team in scoring at nine points, but hasn't played in two of the last three matches and saw 23 minutes against Coastal Carolina. Freshman
Akeem Matthews, who had a couple of scoring chances in the win over Gardner-Webb, is second on the team with three goals.
This series has a very tight history with the Highlanders leading 13-12-3 all-time. The last five games against Radford, the Eagles have gone 2-1-2 with both wins earning shutouts and the loss coming last year, 5-0 on the road.
