ROCK HILL, SC—Coming off its worst defeat since the 2003 season, the men's soccer team hopes to regroup and put an end to the six-game losing streak Wednesday night as it travels to Boone, NC to take on Appalachian State at 7 p.m.
Winthrop opened up Big South Conference action with a 6-0 loss at High Point and was shutout for the fifth consecutive game. Winthrop had a few good chances to break the scoreless streak as
Akeem Matthews hit the post from 12 yards out and
Adam Brundle hit the crossbar on a free kick that was followed up by a goal from
Matt Sluga, but Sluga was whistled for a handball and the goal didn't count. The Eagles scoreless streak has now reached 497 minutes and 38 seconds. The scoring drought definitely hasn't come about from a lack of opportunities.
The Eagles (3-6, 0-1 BSC) will be playing their seventh straight game on the road when they face the Mountaineers Wednesday night. App State is coming off a 2-1 victory at Elon in its Southern Conference opener and is 5-2-2. In fact, App State hasn't lost a game since a 2-0 defeat to Mercer and is riding a six-game unbeaten streak.
This will be the fourth home match of the year for the Mountaineers, who are 1-1-1 so far. In their last home match they tied UNC Asheville 1-1. App State is 0-1-2 so far against the Big South this season while Winthrop is 2-3 against the Southern Conference. The Mountaineers also received votes in the NSCAA South Regional.
Sophomore goalkeeper Danny Free has helped play a big role in an Appalachian State defense that allows just .56 goals per game and has shutout its opponents five times. Free was in net for three of the five shutouts. The Mountaineers goals against average ranks 10
th nationally.
App State's offense is led by senior Sean Drebus, who has four goals. Junior Ryan Lavigne has three goals on the year while freshman Sekani Sinclair has chipped in with two goals and an assist.
Despite not having scored since the win over Wofford College, Winthrop's
Alex Mantchev still leads the team in scoring with seven points (three goals, one assist). Freshman
Akeem Matthews is second on the team with three goals for six points.
Appalachian State leads the all-time series between the two schools at 8-4-2, but Winthrop won the previous meeting 3-2 at the Charlotte/Nike Invitational. Winthrop's last trip to Boone, NC in 2006 resulted in a 1-0 loss.
