Women's Tennis Gets Big Win Over #57 William & Mary

GAINESVILLE, FL –
The No. 66 ranked Winthrop women's tennis upset the No. 57 ranked William & Mary 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.

The win now puts the Lady Eagles at 3-3 on the season, as the Tribe drop their record to 1-2.

Winthrop was able to win a doubles match, but failed to earn the point, as William & Mary took the other two doubles matches. Winthrop's Elizaveta Zayteseva and Andressa Garcia was able to defeat Katie Kargl and Jelje Loomans 8-5 in No. 3 doubles. The Lady Eagles fell short in the other two doubles matches as No. 87 ranked Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli fell to Hope Johnson and Anik Cepeda 8-4 in No. 1 doubles, as Yasmine Alkema and Lisa Wilkinson were defeated by Nina Vulovich and Marlen Mesgarzadeh 8-3 in No. 2 doubles.

In singles action, the Lady Eagles were able to take four matches from William & Mary. Zaytesva was able to win No. 1 singles as she beat Vulovich 6-3, 6-0. In No. 2 singles, Alkema took down Johnson 6-1, 6-2. In No.4 singles, Portioli defeated Cepeda 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, as Garcia beat Kargl 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 in No. 5 singles.

“This is a major win for our program, I'm very proud of the girls,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “We look forward to playing a top rated program in Florida tomorrow.”

The Lady Eagles will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 30 when they take on national power, Florida. Those matches are set to take place at 1 p.m.
