Men's Tennis Sweeps Wofford

SPARTANBURG, SC –
The Winthrop men's tennis team took down the Wofford Terriers 7-0 Saturday afternoon at The John E. Reeves Tennis Center.

The win now puts the Eagles at .500 on the season at 2-2, as Wofford falls to 0-3.

The Eagles were able to take the doubles point as Winthrop's Sergey Belov and Yuta Hirokawa were able to take down Tinus Van Wyk and Stuart Robertson 8-6 in No. 1 doubles. Nadav Ruppin and Dejon Bivens defeated Drew Superstein and Randall Heffron 8-6 in No. 3 doubles to seal up the point.

In singles action, the Eagles swept Wofford taking all six matches. In No. 1 singles, Belov defeated Van Wyk 6-4, 6-4, as Bivens took down
Michael Schecter in a marathon match 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. In No. 3 singles, Levin Levy was able to beat Robertson 6-5, 6-1, as Ruppin defeated Alan Donald 6-3, 6-2 in No. 4 singles. In the final pairings, Guy Kubi took down Paul Bartholomy 6-3, 6-2 in No. 5 singles, as Hirokawa beat Superstein 7-6, 6-2.

"This was a great team effort today," assistant coach Andrew Stubbs said, "Wofford came out and played good doubles and we were lucky to come away with the point; I give a lot of credit to our guys for pulling the doubles point out. In singles, we really stepped up and played well. I was very pleased with everyone's performance in singles."

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 5 when they travel to Norfolk, VA to take on Old Dominion. Those matches are set to begin at 10 a.m.
