Men's Tennis Falls In Marathon Match At UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO, NC –
The Winthrop men's tennis team dropped its second match of the season to UNC Greensboro 4-3 Saturday night at the Starmount Forest CC Indoor Courts. 

The loss now puts the Eagles at 1-2 on the year as the Spartans earned their first win in their first match of the season.

The Eagles were able to take one match in the doubles round, but UNCG took the point. In No. 3 doubles, the tandem of Nadav Ruppin and Dejon Bivens took down Jacob Wright and Yaroslav Litus 8-6. In the other two doubles matches, Sergey Belov and Yuta Hirokawa fell to Orcun Seyrek and Ahmet Sarioglu in No. 1 doubles 8-6, as Liran Levy and Guy Kubi were defeated by Timion Meijs and Chanon Varapongsittikul 8-5 in No. 2 doubles.

Winthrop was able to get points back in the singles round, but it was not enough as the Spartans were able to win the three matches they needed to take victory. In No. 1 singles, Belov knocked off Seyrek 7-6 (9-7), 7-5, as Bivens took down Meijs 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in No. 2 singles. No. 3 singles went to Levy as he deafeated Wright 6-3, 6-2. UNCG took command in the rest of the matches as Litus beat Ruppin 6-3, 6-4 in No. 4 singles, and Varapongsittikul took down Kubi 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-4 in No. 5 singles. In No. 6 singles, Sarioglu defeated Winthrop's Nestor Vargas 6-4, 6-4.

The Eagles will be back on the courts Saturday Jan. 29 when they travel to Wofford College to take on the Terriers. Those matches are set to begin at 1:30 p.m.
