Men's Tennis Gets First Win Of The Season, Blanking Hampton

ROCK HILL, SC –
The Winthrop men's tennis team took its first win of the season by defeated the Hampton Pirates 7-0 Saturday afternoon at Memorial Courts.

The win by the Eagles evens up their record to 1-1 on the season, as Hampton (0-1) drops its season opener.

The match started well for the Eagles as they blanked the Pirates in doubles action. Sergey Belov and Yuta Hirokawa defeated Gellert Varga 8-2 in No. 1 doubles. In No.2 doubles, Liran Levy and Guy Kubi took down Edson Alves and Alvin Fludd 8-5 to give Winthrop its point. 

In singles action, the Eagles won five matches. All of Winthrop's victories were in straight sets.In No. 1 singles Dejon Bivens took down Varga 6-3, 7-5. In No. 2 singles Levy took down Jung-Ho O in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, as Ruppin defeated Fludd 6-1, 7-6 in No. 3 singles. In No. 4 singles, Kubi beat Alves 6-2, 6-0 and Nestor Vargas defeated Kenneth Green 6-0, 6-2.

“The men's team played very well today,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “Nestor picked up his first collegiate win, it was good to take the doubles point, and we look forward to playing UNC Greensboro next week.”

The Eagles now go on the road on Jan. 22 as they travel to UNC Greensboro. Matches will start at 4 p.m.
