Winthrop Tennis Teams, Players Receive Academic Honors From ITA

2010 Men's & Women's Tennis Teams Excel On And Off The Court
ROCK HILL, SC—The 2010 Winthrop men's and women's tennis teams have been named All-Academic Teams by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and nine players, including five from the men's squad and four from the women's team, have earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors. The academic awards are the latest achievements for both Winthrop tennis teams that captured 2010 Big South Conference championships and earned bids to the NCAA regional tournament.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale) for the fall 2009 and spring 2010 semesters. The Eagle men had a team GPA of 3.458 while the Lady Eagles' earned a 3.65 GPA for the year. The Winthrop men's team was among 28 NCAA Div. I schools and two Big South Conference members to receive the award while 60 women's teams, including four Big South schools, were honored.
The five members of the men's team who were named ITA Scholar-Athletes for achieving a 3.5 GPA or better include: Dejon Bivens (Jr., Charlotte, NC), 3.75 GPA, majoring in Political Science with a minor in Sociology; Guy Kubi (So., Tiberias, Israel), 3.925, Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing; Andrea Merg (Jr., Rock Hill, SC), 3.621, Chemistry; Preetham Moras (So., Tumkur, India), 3.86, Sport Management; Nadav Ruppin (So., Ramat Hasharon, Israel), 3.769, Economics with a minor in Mathematics. 
The four women's ITA Scholars include: Yasmine Alkema (Fr., Algiers, Algeria), 3.758, Business Administration; Sandra Herrera (So., Lima Peru), 3.888, Economics with a minor in Accounting; Lisa Wilkinson (Jr., Wellington, New Zealand), 3.95, Psychology with a minor in Sociology; Elizaveta Zaytseva (Jr., Ryazan, Russia), 3.853, Business Administration with a concentration in International Business.
“I am very proud of what our men's and women's teams accomplished this past year. They played as champions on the court and they also excelled in the classroom,” said Cid Carvalho, Winthrop's head men's and women's tennis coach.
