Winthrop Finishes Third In 2009-10 Big South Conference Sasser Cup Competition

Men's Soccer Team Leads Winthrop To Third Place Finish In Sasser Cup Standings

HIGH POINT, NC– For the second time in three years Winthrop has finished third in the Big South Conference's George F. "Buddy" Sasser Cup competition which was presented to Liberty Thursday evening at the League's annual Spring Meetings Awards and Hall of Fame Dinner which was held at the High Point Country Club.  Liberty took home the trophy for the third consecutive year and the eighth time overall.

The Sasser Cup, named for former Big South Conference commissioner Buddy Sasser, is emblematic of the best overall athletic program in the League based on regular season standings and conference tournament success.   Liberty totaled 11.75 points while Coastal Carolina was a close second with 11.28 points and Winthrop totaled 9.26 points.  High Point finished fourth (8.36) while Radford (8.03)closed out the top five.

Winthrop also placed third in both the men's and women's All-Sports Trophy competition as it captured the men's soccer regular season and conference tournament championships, the men's basketball tournament title, and the men's and women's tennis tournament crowns.  Winthrop totaled 83.50 points in nine women's sports for a 9.28 average and compiled 74 points in eight men's sports for a 9.25 average.

Liberty earned the Women's All-Sports Trophy for the second time in three seasons with their average of 12.44 (99.5 points overall in eight sports) while Coastal Carolina claimed the Men's All-Sports Trophy for the first time since 2005-06 with an average of 12.09 (96.75 total points in eight sports).
