RADFORD, VA – The Winthrop men's tennis team won the first round of the Big South Championship as it beat Presbyterian College 4-0 on Thursday in Radford, VA.
With the win, Winthrop improves to 11-11 (6-1) on the season.
The Eagles captured the doubles point as they won two matches and were leading in the third match. In the no. 2 doubles match, the All-Conference duo Nadav Ruppin and Guy Kubi beat Edward Snead and Ryan Walters 8-3, while Dejon Bivens and Liran Levy defeated Ivan Ho and James Zaher 8-2 in the no. 3 doubles match. The All-Conference duo Sergey Belov and Daniel Daudt did not finish their no. 1 doubles match but were leading 6-2 against Matthew Martin and Andrew Brigham.
In singles play, Daudt gave Winthrop its second point as he beat Walters 6-2, 6-0 in the no. 6 singles match, while Levy defeated Ho 6-1, 6-2 in the no. 3 singles match to put the Eagles 3-0 ahead. The clincher came with Ruppin at no. 2 singles match as he beat Martin 6-2 6-1.
"We played well. It's good to win the first-round match," head coach Cid Carvalho said. "We are looking forward to play the semifinals tomorrow at 1 p.m."
The Eagles will face the winner of the match between Coastal Carolina and UNC Asheville in the semifinals of the conference tournament at 1 p.m. on Friday in Radford, VA.
