BOILING SPRINGS, NC – The Winthrop men's and women's tennis teams captured one more conference win as they defeated the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs 5-2 and 6-1 respectively on Wednesday at Boiling Springs, NC.
With the win, the men improve to 6-10 (2-0) on the season, while the women are now 7-8 (2-1).
In men's action, the Eagles started strong as they won the three doubles matches. In the No. 1 doubles match, Sergey Belov and Daniel Daudt defeated Rafael Altmayer and Evgeny Slesarev 8-3, while Guy Kubi and Nadav Ruppin beat Adam Knutsson-Sundblad and Jeremie Tardif 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles match. In the No. 3 doubles match, Preetham Moras and Dejon Bivens defeated Andrew Veeder and Matthew Herrock 8-2.
In the singles side of the competition, Winthrop captured four of the six matches. In the No. 1 singles match, Belov defeated Slesarev 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, while Ruppin beat Veeder 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match. In the No. 4 singles match, Liran Levy defeated Roman Piftor 6-2, 6-2, while Daudt beat Tardif 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 6 singles match.
In women's action, the Lady Eagles started ahead on the scoreboard as they won all three doubles matches. In the No. 1 doubles match, Yasmine Alkema and Elizaveta Zaytseva beat Kasey Ellis and Erica White 8-4, while Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portiolli defeated Rita Gouveia and Ronia Hutterli 8-1 in the No. 2 doubles match. In the No. 3 doubles, Lisa Wilkinson and Sara Abutovic beat Tavenner Black and Allie Mills 8-1.
In singles play, Winthrop captured five of the six matches. In the No. 2 singles match, Zaytseva beat Gouveia 6-0, 6-0, while Herrera defeated Ellis 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 3 singles match. In the No. 4 singles match, Portiolli beat Hutterli 6-2, 6-4, while Wilkinson defeated Black 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 singles match. In the No. 6 singles match, Abutovic defeated Mills 6-0, 6-1.
“All the guys and girls played well today against a very good Gardner-Webb team,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “Everybody played solid from the beginning to the end. Now, we are going to get ready for our next conference match against UNC Asheville on Saturday.”
Both teams will be back in action at 12 p.m. Saturday as they travel to Asheville, NC, to play UNC Asheville.
