ROCK HILL, SC — The Winthrop men's tennis team lost to NAIA second-ranked Auburn-Montgomery 6-1 on Thursday at the Memorial Courts. The Eagles are 3-10 in the season and 1-0 in conference play.
Winthrop started behind in the scoreboard as it lost the doubles point. In the No. 1 doubles match, Daniel Daudt and Sergey Belov dropped to Alberto Romeo and Michael Johnson 8-5, while Guy Kubi and Nadav Ruppin lost to Julian Kurz and Saad Benkirane 8-4 in the No. 2 doubles match. In the No. 3 doubles match, Liran Levy and Preetham Moras dropped to Sadio Doumbia and Bence Toth 8-4.
In singles play, the Eagles dropped all five matches. The only victory came in the No. 6 singles match as Daudt came back from one set down to beat Kurz 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. In the No. 4 singles match, Levy dropped in three sets to Benkirane 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, while Kubi also lost in three sets to Toth 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles match.
“Auburn-Montgomery is a very strong team,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “I felt we competed well on the second half of the match, but Auburn-Montgomery played better than us today and deserved the win. Hopefully, we can bounce back tomorrow against Hampton.”
The Eagles will be back in action at 2 p.m. Friday as they face Hampton at the Memorial Courts.
