Winthrop Baseball Suffers 7-3 Defeat To The Citadel

Eagles Will Open Conference Play Friday Against High Point

, SC – The Winthrop baseball team fell to The Citadel Bulldogs 7-3 on Wednesday evening at Riley Park, in non-conference action.

The Eagles fall to 12-8 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve their record to 15-6 overall.

Dom Patterozzi (0-2) took the loss for Winthrop tossing 2.1 innings and allowed four runs on four hits, two walks and one strikeout. Austin Pritcher (1-1) hurled 6.0 innings on Wednesday and gave up two runs on five hits, four walks and three strikeouts to pick up the win for The Citadel.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings against Patterozzi on RBI's from Matt Simonelli and Billy Altman before Eddie Rohan cut the Eagles deficit to 3-2 with his two-run homer over the left field fence. It was his team-best fifth long ball of the season.

The Citadel broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to increase its lead to 7-2. Simonelli drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single to left field and Altman brought home another run with his RBI sacrifice fly to center field. Justin Mackert drew an RBI bases loaded walk three batters later for the final run of the seventh inning.

Winthrop made it a 7-3 contest in the top of the eighth on Tyler McBride's RBI single to left field. Chas Crane scored on the base hit by McBride after he walked earlier in the inning. 

Rohan and McBride both had two hits apiece on the evening to lead the Eagles offensively, while Rohan had two RBI. Nick Orvin had a team-best three hits for the Bulldogs and Altman had three RBI in the game.

Winthrop will begin Big South Conference play on Friday, Mar. 26 as it hosts the High Point Panthers at 6 p.m. in the first game of a three-game series at The Winthrop Ballpark.
