SPARTANBURG, SC — The Winthrop men's tennis team lost to No. 54 ranked USC Upstate 4-3 on Tuesday in Spartanburg, SC. The Eagles are 3-9 in the season and 1-0 in conference play.
Winthrop started behind in the scoreboard as it lost two of the three doubles matches. The only victory came in the No. 1 doubles match, as Daniel Daudt and Sergey Belov defeated Javier Tori and Renzo Airaldi 8-2.
In singles play, the Eagles won three of the six matches. In the No. 1 singles match, Belov defeated Airaldi 6-2, 3-6, 11-9, while Liran Levy beat Ramiro Blanco 6-3, 7-6 in the No. 5 singles match. In the No. 6 singles match, Guy Kubi defeated Marco Linconir 6-7, 6-2, 10-7.
"The guys played a good match. We fought very hard," head coach Cid Carvalho said. "Unfortunately, we lost again 4-3. Kubi, Levy and Sergey had good wins. We are looking forward to play Auburn-Montgomery at home Thursday"
The Eagles will be back in action at 2 p.m. on Thursday as they face Auburn-Montgomery at the Memorial Courts.
