ROCK HILL, SC — The Winthrop men's tennis team won its first conference match of the season as it beat Presbyterian College 6-1 on Wednesday at the Memorial Courts. The Eagles are 3-7 in the season and 1-0 in conference play.
Winthrop started ahead in the scoreboard as it won all three doubles matches. In the No. 1 doubles match, Daniel Daudt and Sergey Belov beat Andrew Brigham and Zach Sprouse 8-4, while Guy Kubi and Nadav Ruppin defeated Matt Martin and Ivan Ho 8-6 in the No. 2 doubles match. In the No. 3 doubles match, Dejon Bivens and Liran Levy beat Ed Snead and James Zaher 8-5.
In singles play, the Eagles won five of the six matches. In the No. 1 singles match, Belov beat Brigham 6-2, 6-0, while Ruppin defeated Sprouse 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles match. In the No. 4 singles match, Bivens beat Snead 6-1, 6-1, while Levy defeated Ho 7-5, 6-1. In the No. 6 singles match, Kubi beat Ryan Walters 6-1, 6-2.
“The guys had a good match against PC," head coach Cid Carvalho said. “It's good to start the conference play with a win.”
The Eagles will be back in action at 3 p.m. Thursday as they face Davidson at the Memorial Courts.
