NORFOLK, VA -- The Winthrop men's tennis team lost to Old Dominion 4-3 on Sunday in Norfolk, VA. The Eagles are 0-2 in the season.
Winthrop lost the doubles point by dropping the three doubles matches. Daniel Daudt and Sergey Belov fell 8-4 to Benjamin Chomette and Tobias Fanselow in the No. 1 doubles match, while Nadav Ruppin and Guy Kubi lost 8-4 to Yakov Diskin and Krzysztof Muzalewski in the No. 2 doubles match. Diego Toledo and Liran Levy dropped the No. 3 doubles match to Albert Ochagavia and Alfredo Rodriguez 8-3.
In singles play, the Eagles won three out of the six matches. In the No. 3 singles match, Rupin was 5-3 down in the third set but came back to defeat Diskin 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. Bivens fought hard in the No. 5 match, beating Ochagavia 6-3, 1-6, 10-8. In the No. 6 singles match, Levy easily defeated Rodriguez 6-4, 6-2.
“We had good wins at No. 3, 5 and 6,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “Dejon won his first collegiate match. It was a good match for the guys, and I am looking forward to play North Florida at home next Sunday.”
The Eagles will be back in action 11 a.m. Sunday as they play North Florida at the Memorial Courts.
