BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Winthrop men's tennis team lost to UAB Blazers 4-3 on Saturday in Birmingham, AL. The Eagles are 1-5 in the season.
Winthrop started ahead on the scoreboard as it won the doubles point. In the No. 2 doubles match, Guy Kubi and Nadav Ruppin defeated Dan Cornei and Thomas Petrich 8-5, while Liran Levy and Dejon Bivens beat David Zimmerman and Tom Puetz 8-4 in the No. 3 doubles match.
In singles play, the Eagles won two out of the six matches. In the No. 1 singles match, Sergey Belov beat Danny Manlow 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, while Levy defeated Puetz 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.
“This is a tough loss for us,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “We were in a position to win the match. We just could not close it up.”
The Eagles will be back in action at 3 p.m. Sunday as they face No. 20 ranked Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL.
