TROY, AL — The Winthrop men's tennis team beat No. 72 Troy University 4-3 on Friday in Troy, AL. The Eagles are 1-4 in the season.
Winthrop started behind as it lost the doubles point. In the No. 1 doubles match, Sergey Belov and Daniel Daudt lost to Mario Rolemberg Silva and Luis Henrique Grangeiro 8-5, while Guy Kubi and Nadav Ruppin dropped to Branko Weber and Xavier Masson 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles match. In the No. 3 doubles match, Diego Toledo and Dejon Bivens lost to Guilherme Sahadi and Anas Rouchdi 8-4.
In singles play, the Eagles won four out of the six matches. In the No. 2 singles match, Toledo defeated Aurelien Tave 6-1, 6-1, while Liran Levy beat Sahadi 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 6 singles match. The Eagles were down 3-2 in the overall score when Kubi won his No. 4 singles match against Rouchdi. Kubi was down 5-2 in the first set but came back to win 7-5, 6-4, tying the dual match 3-3. The clincher came with Bivens as he beat Rolemberg Silva 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 in the No. 5 singles match.
“We played a very good match today,” head coach Cid Carvalho said. “Diego and Levy played very well. Dejon won the decisive point in the third set. It was a good win for us, and we are looking forward to playing UAB tomorrow.”
The Eagles will be back in action at 1 p.m. Saturday as they face UAB in Birmingham, AL.
