ROCK HILL, SC— For the second time in three games, Winthrop fell in double-overtime as Marshall's Carl Munday headed home the game-winner in the 103rd minute for a 3-2 victory, Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field in men's soccer action.
The Thundering Herd received a free kick outside of the penalty box to the left side of the goal mouth. Sammy Boateng served a very solid cross to the first player running on to the ball and Munday headed the ball down and into the low corner at the near post.
Marshall (9-4-4) rallied from two goals down with goals in the 80th and 81st minute by Peter Bulat and Dalton Hadlock. The first goal came off a free kick as Winthrop was whistled for a foul just outside the penalty area just a couple of yards off the end line. oateng whipped in the free kick and Bulat got his foot on the ball and squeaked it by Winthrop keeper Michael Flato and a defender. The next goal also came off a set piece as Boateng played a corner kick to the top corner of the penalty area to Zach Hunter, who then served a low ball in front of the goal mouth and it was redirected into the far post by Hadlock.
Nick Kowalski put the Eagles (5-10-1) on the scoreboard first after he settled a cross from Ted Bartels, just inside the 18-yard box, and ripped a low shot into the right corner of the goal for his first collegiate goal.
Things continued to go well for Winthrop as it grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 62nd minute on a shot from about 25 yards off the foot of Tinotenda Chibharo.
The goalies were tested a few times as Flato finished with three saves and Marshall goalkeeper Daniel Withrow had four. Marshall had a 19-13 advantage in shots.
Winthrop lost its 10th game of the season, the first 10 or more losses in a season since 2004 and just the sixth time in 22 seasons for head coach Rich Posipanko at Winthrop.
“I'm disappointed in this loss,” said Posipanko. “We let this one get away from us. I thought we played well for 70 minutes and then we had guys make some poor decisions at the end and it cost us. Marshall is a well coached team and well organized.”
Winthrop will wrap-up its regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 3 when it heads to Asheville, NC to take on UNC Asheville at 3 p.m.
