BLACKSBURG, VA--Winthrop sprinters Joe Hall and Octavia Goode stood out with record-setting performances at the 2004 Big South Conference Indoor Championships held at Virginia Tech over the weekend.
Hall and Goode each set conference and championship meet records for their performances in the 60 meter dash. Hall turned in a time of 6.80 while Goode covered the distance in 7.57.
Other All-Big South performers for Winthrop include Ieesha English who placed third in the 60 meter dash. She was also the Big South champion in the 200 meter dash with a school record time of 24.44. Carrie Selmer placed third in the 800 meter run to to earn All-Big South honors. Tomeika Banks earned All-Big South honors by taking third in the 60 meter hurdles and third in the triple jump. The 4x400 meter relay team of Dee Dee Walker, Tabbi Prioleau, English, Goode took third for All-Big South honors. Nichole Tucker placed third in the women's long jump to make All-Big South. Sara Lewis didn't make All-Big South, but she set a school record in the shot put at 12.30m.
While Hall and Goode stood out for Winthrop, it wasn't nearly enough to offset the team performances of Liberty's men and Coastal Carolina's women who captured the 2004 conference titles. The Lady Eagles finished third while the Eagles were seventh.
Coastal Carolina's women broke a string of six consecutive League titles by the Liberty Lady Flames, while Liberty's men have won all seven Big South Indoor championships.
Coastal's women took first with 175.50 points, while Liberty placed second with 125.50 points. Winthrop finished third (80), followed by UNC Asheville (60), Charleston Southern (53), Radford (53), High Point (47) and VMI (28).
Liberty's men won with 200.83 points, followed by VMI (139.66), Radford (96.50), High Point (63), Charleston Southern (47), UNC Asheville (43) and Winthrop (30).
Coastal Carolina's Anne Marie Moutsinga took Women's Outstanding Track Performer with wins in the 3,000 (9:56.23) and 5,000 (17:41.42) meter runs. Teammate Amber Campbell was named Outstanding Field Performer. The Chants' Alan Connie was named Coach of the Year.
VMI's Paulvince Obuon won Men's Outstanding Track Performer honors with wins in the 200 meters (21.42) and 400 meter dash (48.89). Teammate Garrett Brickner won the Men's Outstanding Field Performer. Liberty's Brant Tolsma and VMI's Mike Bozeman were named Co-Coaches of the Year.
Ty Denby was named men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Denby was joined on the men's All-Academic Team was made up of Charleston Southern's Martin Kutz, High Point's Jared Prunty, Liberty's Evan Falat, Radford's Nava, UNC Asheville's Phil Latter.
Coastal Carolina's Marilyn Testa was named women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was joined on the women's All-Academic Team by Charleston Southern's Cheryl Ewing, High Point's Nicole Garner, Liberty's Danielle McNaney, Radford's Tricia Coughlin, UNC Asheville's Micki Logue, VMI's Nadia Wendlandt and Winthrop's Carrie Selmer.
