Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off a big win over Longwood in the home finale this past Wednesday, Winthrop concludes the regular-season on Saturday, Apr. 26 at Furman.
A LOOK AT FURMAN
- This is the 7th meeting between the Eagles and the Paladins with Furman leading the series 5-1
- Furman won the most recent meeting last season in 2024 by a final score of 16-9 on Apr. 13 in Rock Hill
- The first meeting was on Feb. 21, 2016 with the Eagles winning 15-5 in Rock Hill
- Furman has since won the next five meetings, once in 2021, twice in 2022, once in 2023 and the game last season
- Winthrop is looking for their first win in the series since the 2016 encounter
- In their most recent game, Lily Toole's goal with 1:21 remaining in overtime lifted Furman to an 18-17 victory over league-leading Mercer on Wednesday afternoon on the road in Macon, Ga.
- Furman won its fourth straight contest and tied their school record for wins in a season
- Furman handed the Bears their first Big South loss since April 23, 2022 and created a three-way tie atop the league standings with High Point. Mercer entered the contest with Furman having won 24 straight regular season games against conference opponents
- The win was the Paladins' first in overtime since March 17, 2023 when they defeated Kennesaw State, 8-7, in Kennesaw, Ga
- Furman improved to 9-1 all-time in overtime games
- Furman senior attack Anna Roser was named the Big South Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while the Paladins were projected to finish third in the Preseason Women's Lacrosse Poll
- Roser, a native of Easton, Md., was also selected to the preseason all-conference team along with senior midfielder Sofija Buzelis.
- Roser had one of the most productive offensive seasons in program history last year after setting a school single-season record with 66 goals while her 77 points rank second all-time. She was a first team All-Big South selection after leading the conference in goals and was fifth in points
- Buzelis, a Willowbrook, Ill., native, also turned in a career year in 2024 after finishing with 33 points on 25 goals and eight assists. A first team All-Big South pick, she ranked fifth on the team in both points and goals. Buzelis won a team best 68 draws and added 17 caused turnovers, which rank fourth and tied for ninth, respectively, during a season in program history
- Furman is coming off an 8-10 overall record last year
- The Paladins, who are entering their fourth season in the Big South, posted a 6-2 league record and finished third in the conference standings
- For the third consecutive year, Furman advanced to the semifinals of the Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship
LAST TIME OUT
- Winthrop dominated the second half in the home finale with Longwood Wednesday afternoon, 22-9
- Eagles finish 5-4 at Eagle Field this season
- Winthrop outscored Longwood 9-1 in the third quarter
- 10 different Eagles scored a goal, with Jane Tattersall scoring four to lead the way offensively for Winthrop
- Mollie Calabrese got a hat trick and represented her first goals of the season
- Janie Spicer also recorded her first goal as an Eagle
- Winthrop outshot the Lancers 44-23 and 31-15 on goal

A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
- Winthrop is coming off a 2-13 (2-6 Big South) record in 2024
- Eagles are ranked seventh in the Big South preseason poll and are in their first season under interim head coach Hannah Potter
- Potter is Winthrop's fourth head coach in program history
- Eagles welcome 12 newcomers to the squad and assistant coach Jordan Bowers
- Eagles also return 18 players, seven of whom played in all 15 contests last season
- Junior Scarlet Cifarelli is the only returnee who finished in the Top 5 in goals scored last season with 13
- She also led the Eagles in assists last season with 20 and was second on the team in points with 33 and fifth in shots on goal with 18
- Emma Calhoun, Lily Davis, Gabby Pierpont and Madison Mayer were all in the Top 5 in ground balls in 2024
- Mayer also led the team in caused turnovers with 13 and draw controls with 67, resulting in her being named Honorable Mention by the Big South Conference
- Davis and Grace Herrero were close behind in the Top 5 in draw controls with 11 and eight, respectively
- Calhoun, Tori Iannotti, Chloe Patterson and Pierpont were one of six players representing the program on the 2024 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team
- With the selection of these six, they were the first ever academic all-district selections in lacrosse for the Eagles
- Eagles are 108-116 all-time as a program
- Eagles are 55-45 all-time at home
- Eagles are 48-40 all-time in Big South play
SEASON HONORS
- Christina Warren-Big South Freshman of the Week-Mar. 18
- In her first career start, Warren scored a game-high seven goals to lead Winthrop to an 18-17 comeback win over Merrimack
- She converted all four free-position attempts and added one ground ball and one caused turnover
- Warren scored twice in the first half, added another in the third quarter, and netted four in the fourth, including the game-tying goal with 58 seconds remaining to force overtime
- She scored on seven of her 10 shots, nine of which went on target
- Christina Warren-Big South Freshman of the Week-Mar. 25
- Warren totaled 10 points on nine goals and one assist across two games for Winthrop
- She led the team with six goals and an assist at Old Dominion, including a first-quarter hat trick and two fourth-quarter goals
- On Sunday against California, she added another hat trick, scoring twice in a 26-second span in the second quarter and again late in the third to pull the Eagles within two
- She finished the week with a .529 shot percentage and recorded two draw controls
