Lacrosse Hosts Longwood Wednesday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off a one-point loss to conference-leading Mercer at home this past Saturday, Winthrop hosts Longwood in the regular-season home finale on Wednesday, Apr. 23.

A LOOK AT LONGWOOD
  • This will be the 14th meeting between the two schools, with Winthrop leading the series, 8-5
  • Longwood won the most recent meeting, 19-15 in Farmville, Va. last season on Apr. 6, 2024
  • Winthrop's last win in the series was a 13-12 victory in Rock Hill on Apr. 29, 2023
  • The first meeting was on Mar. 13, 2013 on the road with the Lancers winning 14-11 on the way to winning the first two games from 2013-14
  • The first win in the series for the Eagles was a 15-4 result in Farmville on Apr. 17, 2015 on the way to winning five straight in the series
  • A second-half rally came to a heartrending end for Longwood against Presbyterian at home this past Saturday
  • The Lancers had erased a six-goal deficit to take a late lead, but Presbyterian scored two goals in the final 90 seconds to squeeze past Longwood 13-12
  • Emma Claire Mills scored the game winner with a scorcher of a shot with one second to play.
  • Longwood, meanwhile, rallied behind hat tricks from Kendra DeFilippo and Alexandra Hirst as the team outscored Presbyterian 6-3 in the second half
  • Longwood's only win this year was a 17-13 margin at Radford back on Apr. 9
  • Dwayne Hicks was elevated to the head coaching position at Longwood during the 2024-25 offseason
  • Hicks, a Long Island native and University of Notre Dame lacrosse alum, is a coaching veteran. He helped Longwood vault back into the Big South Tournament in his first season in Farmville this past spring
  • Hicks has more than 35 years of coaching experience and is the only lacrosse coach to be a National Coach of the Year in both men's and women's lacrosse
  • During the spring, the Lancers tied a program record with five Big South wins which helped the program finish fourth in the standings. The finish propelled the team to the Big South Tournament for the first time in five seasons
  • In addition, the team won five straight games in the middle of the season, the sixth five-game winning streak in the past two decades. Four of those wins came against Big South foes
  • A trio of players earned All-Big South honors in Julia Koenig, Riley McDonald and Claire Libby. McDonald broke a pair of team single-season records, scoring a program best 63 goals and notching 20 free position goals
  • Last season the Lancers went 8-10 and 5-3 in the Big South and advanced to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament
LAST TIME OUT
  • Winthrop saw a furious late comeback fall just short at home to conference-leading Mercer last Saturday afternoon
  • Six different Eagles scored, with Tori Iannotti and Ava-Claire Collins both registering hat tricks
  • Winthrop had 13 saves to Mercer's eight
  • Winthrop dominated in draw controls, 23-10
  • Three different Eagles had three or more shots on goal while four different Eagles won three or more draw controls
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
  • Winthrop is coming off a 2-13 (2-6 Big South) record in 2024
  • Eagles are ranked seventh in the Big South preseason poll and are in their first season under interim head coach Hannah Potter
  • Potter is Winthrop's fourth head coach in program history
  • Eagles welcome 12 newcomers to the squad and assistant coach Jordan Bowers
  • Eagles also return 18 players, seven of whom played in all 15 contests last season
  • Junior Scarlet Cifarelli is the only returnee who finished in the Top 5 in goals scored last season with 13
  • She also led the Eagles in assists last season with 20 and was second on the team in points with 33 and fifth in shots on goal with 18
  • Emma Calhoun, Lily Davis, Gabby Pierpont and Madison Mayer were all in the Top 5 in ground balls in 2024
  • Mayer also led the team in caused turnovers with 13 and draw controls with 67, resulting in her being named Honorable Mention by the Big South Conference
  • Davis and Grace Herrero were close behind in the Top 5 in draw controls with 11 and eight, respectively
  • Calhoun, Tori Iannotti, Chloe Patterson and Pierpont were one of six players representing the program on the 2024 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team
  • With the selection of these six, they were the first ever academic all-district selections in lacrosse for the Eagles
  • Eagles are 107-116 all-time as a program
  • Eagles are 54-45 all-time at home
  • Eagles are 47-40 all-time in Big South play
SEASON HONORS
  • Christina Warren-Big South Freshman of the Week-Mar. 18
    • In her first career start, Warren scored a game-high seven goals to lead Winthrop to an 18-17 comeback win over Merrimack
    • She converted all four free-position attempts and added one ground ball and one caused turnover
    • Warren scored twice in the first half, added another in the third quarter, and netted four in the fourth, including the game-tying goal with 58 seconds remaining to force overtime
    • She scored on seven of her 10 shots, nine of which went on target
  • Christina Warren-Big South Freshman of the Week-Mar. 25
    • Warren totaled 10 points on nine goals and one assist across two games for Winthrop
    • She led the team with six goals and an assist at Old Dominion, including a first-quarter hat trick and two fourth-quarter goals
    • On Sunday against California, she added another hat trick, scoring twice in a 26-second span in the second quarter and again late in the third to pull the Eagles within two
    • She finished the week with a .529 shot percentage and recorded two draw controls

  • Cifarelli's nine points vs. Radford is tied for 4th in school history
  • Cifarelli and Warren's seven goals scored vs. Radford and Merrimack, respectively, is tied for 5th in school history
