Rock Hill, S.C. – Monay James and Jaylen Hernandez have been named the Comporium Student-Athletes of the Month.

James's win in the women's heptathlon highlighted day two for Winthrop on the second day of the 2024 Big South Outdoor Track And Field Championships on Tue., May 7 at Vert Stadium on the campus of High Point University in North Carolina. James became Winthrop's first ever women's heptathlon champion with a school record of 4966, garnering her an all-conference honor. The point total eclipses the old record Taryn Deleon 4877 set in 2017.

Hernandez was named the Big South Freshman of the Week for games played Apr. 29-May 5, the league office announced on May 6.

During that week, Hernandez batted .357 (5-14) with a home run, three doubles, five RBI and one run scored. He had at least one hit in all three games for Winthrop, including his second three-hit career performance in the series opener against Radford. Hernandez opened the week with one hit and one RBI on Tuesday against Wofford. Following two days of postponements over the weekend due to rain, he started the series with the Highlanders going 3-4 with two doubles, a homer and a career-high four RBI on Sunday in an 8-6 victory for the Eagles. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native then tacked on his third double of the week – and fourth extra-base hit total – in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader to close out play.

This was Hernandez's first weekly award of the season and his career and the third time Winthrop has been bestowed with a weekly award by the conference in 2024.
