Eagles To Welcome South Carolina In Sold Out Re-Match With Gamecocks Tuesday Night

Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off splitting a doubleheader with the Radford Highlanders Sunday afternoon with the first game being the resumption of a suspended game due to rain in the 2nd inning Friday afternoon, Winthrop hosts South Carolina in the second game of a home-and-home series with the Gamecocks on Tuesday night.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS SOUTH CAROLINA
The two schools will meet for the 34th time with the Gamecocks leading the series by a 26-7 count. Winthrop has lost the last 11 meetings to South Carolina. Winthrop's last win in the series was on Mar. 17, 2015 in Columbia, a 7-5 margin. The last meeting between the two teams in Rock Hill was on May 3, 2023 with South Carolina emerging victorious 6-1. Winthrop met the Gamecocks earlier on in the season on Feb. 20 in Columbia, with South Carolina winning 12-2 in seven innings.

BIG SOUTH WEEKLY HONORS
Riley Huge-Big South Starting Pitcher of The Week-Feb. 27
  • Played 7.0 innings, giving up just one hit, no runs and no walks and striking out a career-high 13 batters in getting his first win on the season.
  • This came in his lone start of the week in the first game of the four-game home series with Toledo on Friday (a 3-0 Eagles victory).
  • This was Huge's first weekly award of the season and his career and the first time Winthrop was honored in 2024.
Riley Huge-Big South Starting Pitcher of The Week-Mar. 4
  • In his lone start of the week in the first game of the three-game home series with Maine last Saturday (an 8-0 Eagles victory in the first game of a doubleheader), Huge pitched 7.2 innings allowing only one hit and two walks while recording 20 of his 23 outs via strikeout to lead Winthrop to an 8-0 victory over Maine.
  • His 20 strikeouts are believed to be the all-time single-game Big South record and are the most by any NCAA pitcher since 2017.
  • He struck out the first six hitters he faced before permitting a baserunner, and of his 23 outs, he factored into 22 of the 23 comprised of 20 strikeouts and two groundouts back to the mound.
  • With this performance, Huge broke the Winthrop single-game strikeout record previously held by Kevin Slowey (19 vs. NYIT on Apr. 12, 2003).
  • This is Huge's second weekly award of the season and his career and the second straight week Winthrop has been honored in 2024.
Jaylen Hernandez-Big South Freshman of the Week-May 6
  • Batted .357 (5-14) with a home run, three doubles, five RBI and one run scored. He had at least one hit in all three games, including his second three-hit career performance in the series opener against Radford.
  • Hernandez opened the week with one hit and one RBI on Tuesday against Wofford.
  • Following two days of postponements over the weekend due to rain, he started the series with the Highlanders going 3-4 with two doubles, a homer and a career-high four RBI on Sunday in an 8-6 victory for the Eagles.
  • The Brooklyn, N.Y. native then tacked on his third double of the week – and fourth extra-base hit total – in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader to close out play.
  • This is Hernandez's first weekly award of the season and his career and the third time Winthrop has been bestowed with a weekly award by the conference in 2024.
HUGE WINS THREE NATIONAL HONORS
  • The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its Dick Howser Trophy National Player of the Week awards presented by The Game Headwear for the period ending March 3.
  • Huge was named National Pitcher of the Week.
  • The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
  • This is the first time that an Eagle has won a national player of the week honors by the NCBWA since Jacob Dempsey on May 11, 2006.
  • Huge also was named the National Pitcher of the Week by both Perfect Game and the NCAA.

Winthrop heads to High Point, N.C. this weekend for a three-game Big South series with the conference-leading Panthers. This will be the final Big South road series of the season for the Eagles. The first game will take place on Fri., May 10 at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
