Winthrop Hosts Appalachian State This Weekend

Rock Hill, S.C. – Coming off a three-game sweep of Maine last weekend and with a contest at NC State on Mar. 5 being postponed, Winthrop hosts the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a three-game series this weekend. The first game of the series will take place on Friday, Mar. 8 at 3 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS APPALACHIAN STATE
This will be the 26th meeting between the Eagles and the Mountaineers, with Winthrop leading the series, 18-7 and 15-4 in Rock Hill. The first meetings was Mar. 4 and 8, 1990 in Rock Hill, with each team winning a game. After dropping three of the next five contests to the Mountaineers from 1991-93, the Eagles have totally dominated the series since then, winning 15 of 18 contests from 1994-2021. This also includes a 12-game win streak from 1994-2002. The two teams last met from Feb. 20-21, 2021, with Appalachian State taking two of three from Winthrop in Rock Hill. The most recent meeting was on Feb. 21, 2021 with Winthrop winning 10-9.

BIG SOUTH WEEKLY HONORS

Riley Huge-Big South Starting Pitcher of The Week-Feb. 27
  • Played 7.0 innings, giving up just one hit, no runs and no walks and striking out a career-high 13 batters in getting his first win on the season.
  • This came in his lone start of the week in the first game of the four-game home series with Toledo on Friday (a 3-0 Eagles victory).
  • This was Huge's first weekly award of the season and his career and the first time Winthrop was honored in 2024.
Riley Huge-Big South Starting Pitcher of The Week-Mar. 4
  • In his lone start of the week in the first game of the three-game home series with Maine last Saturday (an 8-0 Eagles victory in the first game of a doubleheader), Huge pitched 7.2 innings allowing only one hit and two walks while recording 20 of his 23 outs via strikeout to lead Winthrop to an 8-0 victory over Maine.
  • His 20 strikeouts are believed to be the all-time single-game Big South record and are the most by any NCAA pitcher since 2017.
  • He struck out the first six hitters he faced before permitting a baserunner, and of his 23 outs, he factored into 22 of the 23 comprised of 20 strikeouts and two groundouts back to the mound.
  • With this performance, Huge broke the Winthrop single-game strikeout record previously held by Kevin Slowey (19 vs. NYIT on Apr. 12, 2003).
  • This is Huge's second weekly award of the season and his career and the second straight week Winthrop has been honored in 2024.
HUGE WINS THREE NATIONAL HONORS
  • The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its Dick Howser Trophy National Player of the Week awards presented by The Game Headwear for the period ending March 3.
  • Huge was named National Pitcher of the Week.
  • The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
  • This is the first time that an Eagle has won a national player of the week honors by the NCBWA since Jacob Dempsey on May 11, 2006.
  • Huge also was named the National Pitcher of the Week by both Perfect Game and the NCAA.
