Q&A-Coroplast Student-Athlete Feature Story
  1. Are there any short-term goals you would like to accomplish in the next few months or even in the next few years?
  • A short term goal of mine within these next few months is to help put Winthrop WBB back on the map. I have a great feeling about this season. We have been putting in the work from day one.
  1. Do you find it difficult to have a social life outside of basketball and how do you manage your athletic responsibilities and other outside recreational and non-recreational activities?
  • When it comes to balancing out a social life while being a student athlete it really just depends on the person. For me Tuesday's & Thursday's are my "busy" days. I know that I won't have any extra free time to hang out. On Monday's & Wednesday's are my "light" days meaning that I have no classes those days-only practice and weights. However, my body is feeling that day really depends on if I'm going to binge watch shows in bed the rest of the day or going to hang out with friends. 
  1. How does being an athlete make you a better person?
  • Being an athlete really shifts you into being a better human being for numerous reasons. To name a few it allows you to take accountability. When you mess up on the court, you have to own up to your mistake for the sake of your team and just fix it. Being an athlete allows you to work on your time management. Here on the Winthrop Women's Basketball team we always say that on time is late. If we are not 15 minutes early to any team thing we have. We have to take accountability and face the consequences. Being an athlete allows you to become quick to listen & slow to speak. When you're in practice and it gets intense a message might be given in a way that we're not used to, but it's about what message is being given in that moment of intensity.
  1. What do you believe is the greatest challenge most athletes are facing today?
  • The main challenge in today's world with student athlete is the pressure we put on ourselves. We don't give ourselves enough grace. This is not a bad thing. We all just want to be great and we all want to succeed on the big stage so when we make a mistake in practice or in a workout we tend to put a lot on ourselves. 
  1. What have you learned about teamwork from your experiences on your teams?
  • As cliché as it sounds teamwork makes the dream work seriously. Teamwork is built on trust, communication, and collaboration. Success isn't based off an individual's talent. Success comes from how well the team bonds and supports one another. When a team has a shared understanding of a goal it really just makes the journey a lot more beautiful.
  1. What is the best piece of advice you have gained from your coaches?
  • Something that my coaches have told me that I always think about is to embrace the journey/moment. Be where your feet are and enjoy it. Embrace the hard practices. 
  1. What was it about Winthrop that attracted you?
  • Winthrop attracted me because of the family vibe the school gives off. Everybody is so authentic and they all care. 
  1. How are you able to understand why people are the way they are?
  • I am a sociology major so I can go on and on when it comes to this question. I feel like a person's upbringing really determines how their actions are influenced because of what they are used to. This could easily change as they get older. I feel like going to another state for college really shifted my whole personality because I had to get outside of myself and learn new things when it comes to dealing with people. 
  1. What are some of the best pieces of financial advice you have for those getting ready to pursue their post-college endeavors?
  • My biggest advice is to save, save, save. Whenever you get a check from school you should put at least 45%-50% of that away and just budget your money. Go to the grocery store, spend about $60 a week and I know we are in college, and love a good restaurant moment. So on the weekends treat yourself to something yummy.
