CLINTON, S.C. -- The Winthrop University women's basketball team forced 27 turnovers and dominated the paint 44-28 in a 72-59 victory over Presbyterian on Wednesday night at Templeton Center.
Amourie Porter led the way with 22 points, while
Naomi Wilson set a new Eagle career-high with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting.
FIRST QUARTER
- Both teams opened with turnovers before Lard picked up a steal and found Porter for a fastbreak layup at the 8:21 mark to make it 2-0.
- Ruff converted a steal into a fastbreak layup at 6:33 to push the Eagle lead to 5-3, then found Naomi Wilson for a jumper in the paint to make it 7-5.
- Porter added two free throws off a Velez foul to extend Winthrop's edge to 9-5 midway through the quarter.
- Winthrop committed seven turnovers in the period, keeping Presbyterian within striking distance despite the Eagles recording six steals.
- Daniella Velez knocked down a three-pointer and Yolanda Floyd scored a fastbreak jumper in the final minute to give Presbyterian a 14-13 lead after one.
- Porter scored a layup with 1:11 left to pull Winthrop within one heading into the second.
SECOND QUARTER
- Ruff opened the second with a jumper to put Winthrop back in front 15-14, then Ryce scored a layup to push it to 17-14.
- Lard assisted a Williams layup and then hit a jumper-plus-free-throw combo to stretch the lead to 22-17 midway through the period.
- Porter scored a fastbreak layup off a Lard assist and then found Naomi Wilson for another layup to make it 26-17.
- The Eagles shot 10-of-16 from the field in the quarter while Presbyterian went just 3-of-14, including 1-of-6 from deep.
- Pierfax came up with a steal and Lard assisted a Porter layup late to push the lead to 31-20.
- Ryce capped the half with a jumper in the final 20 seconds as Winthrop carried a 35-22 lead into the break.
THIRD QUARTER
- Naomi Wilson answered a Tal layup with back-to-back jumpers — including one off a Ruff assist — to keep the lead at 42-28 midway through the period.
- Porter blocked a Haddock layup, then scored on the other end to push it to 40-24 early in the quarter.
- Presbyterian mounted a 15-2 run over a five-minute stretch, getting a Velez three-pointer and a Haddock tip-in to cut the deficit to 42-39 with 3:47 left.
- Porter stopped the bleeding with an and-one layup at 3:24, then grabbed a rebound and scored in transition to push it back to 47-39.
- Lard added a layup to make it 49-41, and Williams scored inside off a Ryce assist to push the lead to 51-43 with 1:56 remaining.
- Winthrop carried a 51-43 lead into the fourth despite being outscored 21-16 in the period.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Ryce opened the fourth with a jumper to make it 53-43, and Porter followed with two free throws to push the lead to 55-45.
- Porter grabbed an offensive rebound and converted an and-one layup at 6:28 to extend the advantage to 60-49.
- Presbyterian got as close as eight on a Haddock layup at 6:09, but Naomi Wilson answered with a jumper off a Ruff assist to make it 62-52.
- Lard hit a jumper at 3:52 and Naomi Wilson converted two free throws off a Lard steal to push it to 68-57 with a minute left.
- Ruff sealed it with a fastbreak layup off another steal with 35 seconds remaining to make it 70-57.
- Lard went 2-of-4 from the line in the final 20 seconds to close out the 72-59 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Porter led the Eagles with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, going a perfect 6-of-6 from the line with six rebounds, two assists and a block.
- Naomi Wilson added 15 points on an efficient 6-of-10 from the field with five boards and a block in 24 minutes.
- Lard contributed 14 points, four assists, two steals and a block, while Ruff added nine points and a game-high four steals.
- Winthrop dominated the paint 44-28 and scored 24 points off Presbyterian's 27 turnovers.
- The Eagles shot 52.8% from the field but went 0-of-5 from three-point range, winning the game entirely inside the arc.
- Aminata Tal led Presbyterian with 15 points, while Krystal Haddock had 11 points and 13 rebounds and Amani Williams added 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
