ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Winthrop University women's basketball team mounted a furious 25-11 fourth-quarter charge but couldn't erase a 19-point deficit, falling to UNC Asheville, 64-59, on Wednesday night at Winthrop Coliseum.
Madison Ruff led Winthrop with 17 points, while
Amourie Porter added 16 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double in five games.
FIRST QUARTER
- Naomi Wilson opened the scoring with a jumper off a Lard assist, then Lard and Ryce drilled back-to-back three-pointers to give Winthrop an early 8-2 lead.
- UNC Asheville chipped away behind McDaniel, who grabbed an offensive rebound and scored, then converted a free throw to cut it to 8-3.
- Orianegbena scored a layup off a Maxey assist and Green added another to trim the deficit to 8-7 midway through the period.
- Freeman gave UNC Asheville its first lead at 9-8 on a jumper at 3:01, and McDaniel pushed it to 15-10 with a putback layup off her own miss.
- Ruff scored a layup with 1:07 left and added another at the buzzer, but McMillan answered in between to leave Winthrop trailing 17-14 after one.
- Winthrop committed four turnovers while UNC Asheville grabbed five offensive rebounds to keep possessions alive.
SECOND QUARTER
- Ruff converted a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 17-16, but McDaniel answered immediately with a layup to push it back to 19-16.
- UNC Asheville used a 7-0 run, capped by an Orianegbena layup after multiple offensive rebounds, to push the lead to 26-16 with 3:57 remaining.
- Porter stopped the bleeding with a steal-and-score fastbreak layup at 3:13, then added another layup off a Williams assist to make it 26-20.
- Ruff hit a free throw and Marquez answered with a three-pointer for UNCA to push the lead back to 29-22.
- The Eagles went just 3-of-11 from the field in the quarter and managed only nine points as Orianegbena controlled the glass.
- Winthrop trailed 29-23 at the half despite forcing eight Bulldog turnovers in the period.
THIRD QUARTER
- UNC Asheville opened the third on a 7-0 run, as Freeman hit a jumper and Maxey drilled a three to push the lead to 34-23 in under 90 seconds.
- Orianegbena added a layup off an offensive rebound to make it 36-23, and Green converted two free throws to extend the margin to 38-25.
- Freeman scored a fastbreak layup off a Green assist to push the Bulldog advantage to 40-25 with 6:23 left.
- Williams scored a layup off a Ruff assist after a Porter steal to briefly stop the run, but McDaniel answered with a three to make it 43-27.
- Porter grabbed an offensive rebound and converted a putback layup at 1:43, but the damage was done, Green scored a layup to push it to 51-32.
- McMillan hit two free throws in the final 30 seconds as UNC Asheville carried a commanding 53-34 lead into the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Lard opened the fourth with a layup and Ruff followed with a fastbreak layup off a defensive rebound to cut it to 53-38.
- Ryiah Wilson ignited the comeback, picking up back-to-back steals off Freeman turnovers and converting a fastbreak layup to make it 55-40.
- Ruff converted two free throws off a steal and Ryiah Wilson added a free throw off another steal as the Eagles cut it to 57-45 with 5:50 left.
- Lard drilled a three-pointer off a Naomi Wilson assist to make it 57-48, then Porter grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to cut it to 57-50.
- Lard hit an and-one jumper to make it 59-53, then scored another layup to pull Winthrop within 59-57 with 2:36 remaining.
- Porter pulled the Eagles within three at 62-59 on a putback layup with 37 seconds left, but Freeman iced it at the line with two free throws and Winthrop couldn't connect on its final two three-point attempts.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Ruff finished with 17 points, two steals and an assist, scoring nine of her points in the fourth-quarter rally.
- Porter recorded 16 points and 11 rebounds on 8-of-12 shooting with three steals and a block in 35 minutes.
- Lard added 13 points, including two three-pointers and nine points in the fourth quarter, but fouled out with 8:54 left in the period.
- Ryiah Wilson finished with just three points but recorded a game-high six steals, with five coming in the fourth quarter to fuel the rally.
- Deb Orianegbena led UNC Asheville with 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting and 12 rebounds, while Journee McDaniel added 16 points and 12 rebounds.
- UNC Asheville outrebounded Winthrop 47-24, including 19 offensive boards that led to second-chance opportunities.
