CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Winthrop University women's basketball team closed the regular season with a commanding 77-55 victory over Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon at the Buc Dome.
FIRST QUARTER
- Charleston Southern struck first on a Bailey three-pointer off a Sra steal, but Pierfax answered with a three off a Lard assist to tie it at 3-3.
- Garcia drilled a three to give the Bucs a 6-4 lead before Naomi Wilson tied it with a layup, setting off a back-and-forth stretch.
- Sra hit a three and Bailey added a layup to push Charleston Southern's lead to 11-6 midway through the period.
- Porter sparked a late Winthrop run with a putback layup, a jumper off a Lard assist and an and-one putback to give the Eagles a 15-14 lead after one.
- Ryiah Wilson picked up a steal and Porter added another in the final 90 seconds as Winthrop's defense tightened.
- Winthrop committed seven turnovers in the quarter but grabbed 12 rebounds to stay in it.
SECOND QUARTER
- Lard opened the second with a jumper and Ruff added a layup to push the lead to 19-14 before Ellis answered with a layup for CSU.
- A Barbitch three-pointer gave Charleston Southern a 24-22 lead with 4:10 remaining — its last lead of the game.
- Porter tied it with a layup, then blocked a Dotson attempt on the other end to ignite a 16-0 Winthrop run to close the half.
- Porter scored seven points during the run, including a three-pointer off a Ryiah Wilson assist to make it 29-24.
- Ryiah Wilson capped the half with a steal-and-score fastbreak layup at the buzzer to push the lead to 33-24.
- The Eagles shot 8-of-15 in the quarter while forcing four Charleston Southern turnovers.
THIRD QUARTER
- Porter opened the third with a steal and found Ruff for a fastbreak layup to make it 35-24 before Garcia answered with a three.
- Porter converted an and-one jumper to push the lead to 38-27, then found Ruff for another fastbreak layup to make it 40-29.
- Naomi Wilson scored a layup off a Lard assist and Ryiah Wilson added a fastbreak layup off a Ruff steal to extend the margin to 44-31.
- Lard drilled a three-pointer to push the lead to 49-34, but picked up a technical foul on the next possession, giving Ellis two free throws and a subsequent three to cut it to 49-39.
- Lard answered with a jumper and Ryiah Wilson added two free throws to push the lead back to 53-39.
- Naomi Wilson hit a jumper off a Lard assist at the buzzer to send Winthrop into the fourth up 55-39.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Lard and Naomi Wilson scored quick baskets to open the fourth, pushing the lead to 59-39 in the first minute.
- Ruff added a layup and then drilled a three off a Lard assist to extend the advantage to 64-40.
- Pierfax hit a jumper off a Ruff assist and Ruff knocked down another three off a Naomi Wilson assist to make it 69-42.
- Charleston Southern got as close as 18 on a Garcia three at the 4:14 mark, but Porter answered with a layup off a Lard assist and added two free throws to push it back to 73-51.
- Ryce and Williams each converted a pair of free throws in the final 90 seconds to ice the 77-55 win.
- The Eagles shot 7-of-12 in the quarter and held CSU to 6-of-13 to close out the regular season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Porter finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds on 9-of-14 shooting, going 4-of-4 from the line with four steals and a block.
- Lard recorded eight assists against three turnovers, adding 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting with a three-pointer.
- Ruff contributed 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting, going 2-of-2 from deep with a block and zero turnovers in 35 minutes.
- Naomi Wilson added 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting with six rebounds, while Ryiah Wilson had six points, three steals and three rebounds off the bench.
- Winthrop dominated the glass 44-28, scored 40 points in the paint compared to just 16 for Charleston Southern and converted 16 Buccaneer turnovers into 17 points.
- Tyonna Bailey led Charleston Southern with 17 points, while Alba Garcia added 11 and Asha Sra dished out eight assists with nine rebounds.
